After a long time, we had the fortune of listening to the Great Man singing some numbers close to his heart - courtesy Venu & Kalyan pair cooridnated by Bangalore Team

One more highlight (which i think Mr.Giridhar may be pointing out in his email) is that this Meet had the highest collection of Contributions / Donations till date. The overall response was astounding emphasised by the strength of the attendance

The show featuring Venu & Kalyan compensated that feeiling to a great extent

To sum it up, IT WAS A GREAT AND DIFFERENT EVENT which deserves abundant applause from ONE & ALL

COIMBATORE: For the second successive year, Ganga Hospital's walkathon to highlight the benefits of joint replacement surgeries saw a determined group of patients demonstrating how they have been helped to overcome pain in the hips or knees that virtually immobilised them for months, years or even decades.

Led by playback singer S.P. Balasubramaniam, hospital Chairman J.G. Shanmughanathan and Directors S. Rajasekaran and S. Rajasabapathy, women and men who had undergone joint replacement operations walked nearly one kilometre from a school to the hospital in the city on Sunday to declare their victory over pain. Managing Director of Sri Krishna Sweets was among the others who took part in the walk that was co-organised by the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central.

Slogans

Wearing T-shirts with the following slogans: “Freedom from Pain” and “Dependence to Independence”, the walkers later took part in a lemon and spoon race and a walk race. A woman from Uganda, who underwent surgery only eight days ago, was among the participants, Dr. Rajasekaran said.

The orthopaedic surgeon and president of the Association of Spine Surgeons of India said the Kalaignar Insurance Scheme for Life-saving Treatment was a boon to arthritis patients who did not have the funds to meet the high cost of knee or hip joint replacement surgeries.

Dr. Rajasekaran said the hospital had so far performed 75 joint replacement surgeries under the scheme. “These patients, who could not dream of undergoing this procedure earlier, have now been cured of their problems with the entire costs met by the Government under the scheme,” he said. Severely deformed knees and hips had been set right. “We have done over 1,000 procedures to fix fractures, joint replacement and spine surgery under this scheme,” he said.

K. Ashok (28), who had suffered a debilitating injury in his right hip, took part in the walk and other events on Sunday. “I was unemployed for a year as I was in bed. I underwent a hip joint replacement only in December and am able to drive a tractor now, thanks to the insurance scheme,” the farm worker said.

S.K. Asok Kumar (42), a technician in a software company, had severe pain in both hip joints. Steroids taken for skin allergy treatment was said to have been the reason. “Now, I can climb stairs and carry out my work,” the beneficiary of the insurance scheme said.

Apart from injuries and drug-induced problems, arthritis was a very crippling problem, Dr. Rajasekaran said.

Alarming evidence

There was evidence to prove that one in five persons above the age of 60 had some form of arthritis.

If not treated, it could worsen to a stage where the patients would be totally dependent on others for mobility and even their daily routine. This, in turn, could cause depression in the patients.

Stating that there were 20 million people in the country with severe arthritis, he said this musculo-skeletal disease could affect even children and adolescents.

Timely and proper treatment could prevent them from being crippled for life.

Apart from the lack of awareness, the lack of access to treatment and the inability to meet the costs were the main reasons for not undergoing timely treatment.

The Government's insurance scheme removed these obstacles that had stood between the poor and joint replacement surgeries.

Interaction

At a function held after the walkathon, Dr. Rajasekaran showed pre-surgery and post-surgery footage of severe arthritis to show how timely surgical intervention helped. Mr. Balasubramaniam also spoke the benefits of good health and advanced medical care.

This was followed by an interaction between the audience and doctors on arthritis.

SPB Mumbai Concert Review

The much awaited program of S P Balasubrahmanyam at Mumbai took place on 27th Febrauary at the famous Shanmukhananda Hall at Sion.

Ragalaya – A cultural organisation which conducts/encourages lot of programmes on Music this year decided to felicitate the Legendary Singer S P Balasubrahmanyam after felicitation S Janaki Previously. The award of Lifetime achievement was presented to S P Balasubrahmanya in a traditional way i.e through Music. A couple of upcoming talented singers showcased their talent by singing few songs and then it was announced that S P Balasubrahmanyam would be presented with the Life Time Achievement Award.

The programme started at 6.45 pm and the Legend entered the Hall exactly at 7.15 Pm. He handed over awards to those who won singing competitions conducted by Ragalaya. The kids who received the awards from the hands of Legend were elated and the joy was evident from their expressions.

It was time to celebrate, Clad in Shining Black outfit, the legend was presented with the Life time achievement award, with the anchor praising the legend for all his achievements. It was now time to Balu to speak a few words and balu fondly remembered about his association with Shanmukhananda Hall where he performed for the first time in the year 1971. He recollected that he used to rehearse with legendary Lata mangeshkar whenever there were any foreign concerts.(in HIS own words - I had the previlage of working on the stage as a part of a attorny with Bharatratna Lata mangeshkar. And everytime we were abroad she used to call me all the way from chennai for rehearsals here in mumbai. I was very much afraid of asking her but one day I took my heart into hand and asked here "Didi, why are we singing the same numbers again and again and you are spending a lots of money on me by asking me all the way to come from chennai for rehearsals. then Didi told that Baluji with these rehearsals we can make mistakes with confidence".

He candidly admitted that "I am bound to make mistakes...and its my right and you have every right to excuse me. Dont calculate the numbers or language we are singing, Think about the music as a language”

The pure magic then started to flow, first with the evergreen Ilaya Nila from the film Payanangal Mudivathillai(1982) exactly at 7.30 pm.

The auditorium was full and the melody started raining. Whenever Balu sings songs of Ilayaraja he seems to enjoy them more and more as the time passes, same was the case with this song.

As it was a programme organised by Ragalaya which I think is basically is a Kerala based group, it was apt to sing the first song of his career in Malayalam – Ee Kadalum Maru kadalum from Kadal palum(1970), which was brilliantly composed by the great Devarajan. SPB recollected how he came into picture of singing this song which was supposed to be sung by K J Yesudas. SPB also recollected about the man who made this song his meal- Mr M Sekhar, the most popular arranger for almost all the music directors at that time and father of a prodigial song who now is known as Alla Rakha Rahman. It was a rare thing in his concerts, as SPB usually doesn’t sing full song in Malyalam, and here he sang the full song with the same emotion he sang almost 40years ago.

Next was the eternal/immortal number from his quiver, no guesses for it, it was the song which made public stand and take notice of this man from konetammapeta. Yes it is from the film sankarabharanam and the song Shankara naada sareera para.. This one song whenever SPB sings he never forgets to mention that after this film people started respecting him. It was the same magical voice which sang that song almost 31 years ago and it was the same magic again

Nilave Vaa from the film Mounaraagam was the song which followed Shankara naadasareera para which received a tremendous applause.

It was now time to sing a hindi song and we all were very curious to know which song he would select. The moment humming started entire audience started humming the song, It was again an Ilayaraja composition in the original, Saathiya Toone kya kiya from the film Love.

The co Singer was a relatively young and new girl, who was so nervous singing with the legend and erred while singing, Balu being the seniormost singer with a mind boggling 30000+ songs carried on with the song with great aplomb and at the same time motivating the little girl who was visibly shaken.
It was a time to take a small break by the legend and upcoming singers …. upcoming singers sang some melodious songs and masakali from Delhi6 was among them which received the maximum applause.

Baalu came again with another raja number Maanguyile Poonguyile from the film Karakatta karan which was again a show stealer. With the percussionist getting a special mention. After this song SPB told the main person of orchestra to make a habit of introducing all the musicians, He then asked him to get al l the musicians names.

We were eagerly waiting for a rahman number and very curious/eager and desparate to hear from SPB. Hold your breath we were surprised by the selection of the song. If surprise was a smaller word then rendering of the song was something else (absolutely out of the world). Yes it was the great melody from the wizard of music, Alla rakha rahman from the film Duet. Anjali Anjali pushpanjali.

It was the same co-singer who earlier erred, but this time Balu himself was guiding her in every note. You might be wondering which version of the song he sang,(Duet was made in telugu, hindi also and spb has sung the song in all the languages), He started in pallavi in Tamil and then charanams(antras) in Telugu and Hindi and again finished the Mukhda in tamil. Who else can do this with the same ease. The musician who played Saxophone was given a standing ovation.

There was one more surprise waiting for us. AS soon as the song was over, it was announced that another legend is coming, everyone were on their toes as to see who it would be and mind you it was a total surprise of lifetime when we saw a stout man with yellow shirt and while dhoti with a cloth band on his head, coming , removing his chappals and prostrating on the feet of SPB. It was SIVAMANI, the greatest drummer india has ever produced

He spoke a few words about SPB saying that he is my guru, god and everything, for which Balu who is known to be a very humble man said that it is SivaMani who had made internation fame, with sheer hard work.

It was an affectionate union of two legends in their own fields

There were a few kannada people and spb again decided to give a treat for those kannada fans who were present there with yet another Raja number from the film Geeta – jothe Jotheyali . As usual it was the vintage balu with all those hummings and sangathis….

Then a vintage song was to be sung, the very first song of spb Ayiram nilava vee from the film shantinilayam. The co-singer was a maharashtrian who doesn’t understand a single word of tamil, yet she gave a good company to balu.

Sundari Kannal Oru was the song followed by Aayiram Nilave Vaa. Before this song the anchor asked about the speciality of the song to the legend and He replied that this song was recorded in Mumbai with the orchestra of R D Burman by Ilayaraja. The moment the starting bit was over everyone in the studio stood up to give a standing ovation to Ilayaraja.

Then came the song of the show- No guesses – The eternal emotional song from the magic box of Lakshmikant Pyarelal- Tere mere beech mein kaisa hai ye bandhan- It was simply SuPerB. It was the song which received greatest applause.

Finally admitting that he is not comfortable in singing medley, he did sing a medley starting with the song which is very close to his heart – Ye divilo virisina parijaatamo from Kannevayasu and continued with takita tadhimi, sangeetha jathi mullai, Unakenna Mele …..Engeyam eppadum, sangeetha megam

We had to leave the show half hearted as we were not fully satisfied, it was like a thirsty person getting only one glass of water…….

The Raagalaya Music Award- 2009 is announced. The most popular playback singer Shri. S.P. Balasubrahmanyam is the recipient of Raagalay Music Award 2009. The award ceremony will be held at Shanmukhananda Chandrasekharandra Saraswati auditorium, Sion (E) on 27th February 2010 (saturday) at 6.30 pm, followed by a grand musical evening by Shri S.P. Balasubrahmanyam & other popular singers.

As in the past, Raagalaya is conducting a light Music Competition on 31st January 2010 at Marol Education Academy, Bhawani Nagar, Marol, Mumbai-400059 on 31st January 2010 from 9.00 am onwards. The competition will be in 5 age groups ie. (A)- 5 to 10, (B)- 11 to 15, (C)- 16 to 25, (D)- 26 to 40 & (E)- 41 & above. There will be 2 winners (1st & 2nd) from each group. Contestant are allowed to sing any Indian languages song of thier choice preferably Malayalam. The song should be by heart. We will be providing a keyboard & tabla as a support. Award will be handed over on 27th February 2010 at Shanmukhananda Hall, Sion (E) during the Raagalaya Music Award 2009 mega event.

Dr.SPB FANS ANNUAL MEET - DETAILED WRITEUP

The much eagerly awaited Annual Meet with SPB organized by the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation took place on 21st February 2010 (Sunday) at SPB’s very own “Kothandapani Audio Laboratories” at Chennai between 11.30am to 2.00pm

I am once again tremendously pleased to present to you a detailed write-up of the event. I have tried my best to make it as elaborate as possible. Please pardon me if anything is left out.

Before starting off on the event, let me brief about what took place at the venue in the preceding one hour to the Meet.

On one side, we had Madhumita, Lakshmi and a few others commanding posts at the entrance to the venue and ensuring that all the participants registered themselves for the event by paying the fees and collecting their badges & payment receipts

We also had the Bangalore Fans Team (coordinated by Prabhanjan Tattar) displaying an array of rare Gramophone records & CDs of SPB’s songs. He was so possessive about it and rightly so, that he had displayed a placard which read “Please do not touch” which many fans obliged. (SPB later during the fag end of the Meet expressed his thanks to this fan for having taken pains to display a collection of his rare audio records of his songs)

Inside the auditorium, we had the primary organizers Giridhar Raja, Ashok, Seshadri & Sampath going over the final arrangements for the Meet. There was Satish on the Keyboard who was preparing himself to support some of the enthusiastic singers who were to perform during the Meet

We had some of the fans rehearsing their part to perfection and eagerly awaiting the moment to perform on stage in the presence of the Legend. There were supporting members who were getting the necessary “minus-1” tracks organized & then with Ashok going around finalizing the list & order of performers.

Here & there, we had many fans enquiring each others’ health & wealth, as for many, it had been a long time that they had met

Ashok, as his role demanded, gave a brief summary of the events planned for the Meet and he also presented a few guidelines to the participants in the program as how to organize themselves for each event of the Meet so that time could be fruitfully used & spent. For eg., he requested that Photographs be taken in batches of 4 so that time could be shortened, that performers understand their place in the queue so that they are ready to come to the stage to perform without delays & so on …………..

Simultaneously there was a slide show running on the big screen of the auditorium on the various charity events that have been organized by the Fans Association over the last several years.

For first time visitors to the Kothandapani Audio Laboratories, there were a few things to observe. Many of us have heard the Legend talk so passionately about Shri Kothandapani (his Mentor), Mohammed Rafi (his Inspiration), Ghantasala (his Master) and Radhakrishnan (his close Friend). Many people talk a lot but lack in deed. But when one observed the Audio Laboratory, one could see the walls at the entrance decorated with big size paintings of all the above 4 personalities for whom our SPB had so much regard & love & about whom he has talked a lot in his public interviews.

Having given a prelude to the Meet, let me now go to the body of the Meet.

The program was to start at 10.30am. However, the Legend had all the fans restless when he did not turn up on time. Anyway, waiting for him is also a pleasure in a sense that it shows us again & again how much we all adore him when we almost die to see him sooner. Some of the fans participating in one of the special events planned for the day may have been thankful as they could rehearse their part of the program to perfection. Performing before a Legend like him was never going to be easy

The Legend entered the venue at 11.30am and greeted one and all with his trademark ‘Namashkaaram”. We had a few children offering him flowers at the entrance. While many fans were quite eager to get his image embedded on to their cameras and cell phones without any delay, he chided them and took them into the auditorium along with him.

As he entered the auditorium, fans inside gave him a standing and applauding welcome. We had one die-hard fan Balaji ( a grown up boy with the mind of a child) literally stopping him in his tracks and lovingly & adamantly pleading with him to sing the Sankara song from Sankarabharanam for him. SPB promised him that he would do so in the later part of the Meet. The organizers then guided him to the dais where he greeted all the fans

Ashok first announced the list of programs that were to take place which read like this

2) Photograph Session (combined with memento presentation to fans by SPB)
3) Celebrity Talk Video
4) Charity Event
5) Special Performances by Fans (Dance & Music) (first time ever at the Meet with Karaoke tracks)
6) Speech by SPB
7) Vote of Thanks
8) Launch of Audio/Video Website by Bangalore Branch
9) Distribution of autographed photograph of SPB
10) Lunch

With reference to the earlier Meets, one of the prime events missing out was the “Question & Answer” session which has been part & parcel of all earlier Meets. As understood, this was replaced with the Fans’ Special Performance event (organized for the first time in a meet in a planned manner) which was a pleasant addition as it provided a stage for many to perform in front of an artist that they admire and adore. Time never permitted having both events and hence we had to do away with the Q&A.

Satish started off with the rendering of a devotional number (his own composition as understood later). It was a classic performance in a low and controlled tone which was very much appreciated by the Legend himself who blessed him with a legendary kiss on his forehead

Next, as planned, we had the fans (many with their families as well) capturing themselves with SPB for the present, future & posterity. Many of the fans had brought their own presents which they offered to the Legend before posing for the photographs. Happiness was abundant on all the faces considering that it was one of the rare moments when one came in contact physically with the much loved human being. On his part, SPB as ever, lent his pleasing disposition to the photographs. He also presented a memento (a pen holder with a clock) to all the fans on behalf of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation (Courtesy :: Sridhar & Team for capturing the moments both on Still & Video Cameras)

Next was the Celebrity Talk Show on the Video. Each & every time, the Legend mentions this part of the program as the most embarrassing one. He likes talking a lot about others but is at sea when others praise and talk good about him. This is one of his traits which had drawn one and all to him. In this show, first, we had the veteran Music Director M.S.Viswanathan talking about all the good qualities of our SPB. He went on to narrate the incidents which led to SPB singing his first Tamil song in his composition. This I will not repeat in detail as many already know about it (like how he sang “nilave ennidum nerungadhae and MSV asking him to learn Tamil – as his Tamil diction was not OK and come back for a sure chance and how two years later MSV once passed SPB in a recording studio in the then Madras and recalled him and gave him his first break in Tamil Films………….). MSV pointed out that apart from Sangeetham (Music), Balu had lot of Ingidhum (courteousness) which had made him a success. He mentioned that Balu never forgot his seniors in the film industry and that has been one of his success points which had endeared him to one and all. Kamalahaasan then followed in the show. He mentioned how they had grown up together in the film industry and how SPB’s voice had become synonymous with his in the Telugu Industry for dubbed films and how his singing voice had become an identity for him in the Tamil Industry to which he had danced & emoted a lot. He considers SPB as his Annayya (big brother). In fact, he made the comment of the day when he said “Balu is my Telugu Annayya and I am his Tamil Thambi (younger brother)” This created a pleasant ripple of laughter and applause from the gathering. He also mentioned that the workload handled by Balu was stupendous in the sense even though he was a senior to Balu in the film industry there were many dry years for him whereas Balu had been working non-stop for so many years and still working and may give many more thousands songs
Next, we had his long lasting friend Gangaiamaran (a music composer / lyricist and compere) speaking about SPB, how they had grown up together, and those early years in their career when they had all worked together in SPB’s orchestra and how SPB had even then shone as a good human being. Melody songs composer Vidyasagar was the next & final celebrity. He said that SPB was a very blessed person and a great human being. He was sure that SPB still had it in him to last for over 100 years and that even today he is a very disciplined singer who added great value & meaning to the songs composed by Music Directors

Following this, was the Charity event, one of the prime purposes of the Annual Meet. Two deserving institutions namely Dean Foundation (a center for Palliative care for terminally ill patients like cancer patients etc.,). They are based out of Chennai. The other was a school by name “Thirumpundi N Munuswami Memorial government senior secondary school” and “Panchayat Union elementary school”. Both are in a village called Keezhkuvalaivedu near Vandavasi, around 120 kms from Chennai. These two institutions had been earlier identified by the organizing committee comprising Ashok, Seshadri, Sampath and token donations were handed over by SPB to the representatives of these institutions. We also had the representatives talking about their institutions and the services rendered by them. One of the institutions based in Chennai helps out those terminally ill patients (like those suffering from cancer, brain tumours etc…) who are homeless and without any support and help them to tide over the last days of their lives in a bearable manner. It is really heartening that such institutions exist to serve the society and the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation is indeed headed towards its objective while serving such institutions. The other institution was a school in Vandavasi for whom the Foundation donated class room furniture, stationeries etc…. Goods worth Rs.1.30 lakhs were donated to these two institutions in kind comprising Table/Benches, Bureaus, storage racks, ceiling fans, food plates, self-care kits and floor mats. The SPB Fans Charitable Foundation expresses its heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed generously to this good cause.

The next event that followed was one of the most awaited one as it was to be a platform for the many fans to showcase their talent, love and admiration for the Great Singer and Human being. First it was film singer Kalpana (also daughter of SPB’s close associate during his early singing career) singing a medley of SPB’s Telugu & Tamil songs with Satish accompanying her on the keyboard playing the lead notes. From then on it was the non-professional fans that had a dream day singing his songs passionately. Every effort that day had a beauty to it and the Legend patiently listened to each and every rendition with great attentiveness and gave due appreciation for the efforts. (Later in the program he mentioned that this program was much better than him talking all the time – he advised the fans not to restrict themselves to his songs but also to perform good songs of other singers as well – Aah!!!! – that is our beloved SPB. The penultimate event was the Legend’s Speech. He started off on a humane note by narrating the incidents of his previous day (to the Meet) which he had spent with Kanchi Shri Jayendra Saraswati. He said that he had performed for him for about 45 minutes and had later had a discourse with him on human behaviour and nature. He said that Shri.Jayendra explained that even though animals are not blessed with the sixth sense they gave better output for their intake of food whereas humans though possessing the sixth sense and ate better food failed to perform better most of the times. So, he requested one and all to be a better human being and serve the society. He then congratulated the organizing committee and the fans for churning out such a wonderful Meet. He was not keen in pointing out any one person in particular and he called himself and the fans included as one big tree and he did not want to name specific branches as he felt all branches were important for him. He encouraged the fans to go on and continue doing such good events and charities and never ever to break this wonderful chain that has formed now. He wants it to get bigger and stronger so that bigger charity events could take place finally benefitting the society. He said that he had very ambitious plans in contributing to the society and for that he would need the help of his fans to raise funds by organizing his concerts for a good cause. He paid due respects again to his Mentor Shri.Kothandapani who had predicted this popularity and fame as early as 44 years ago. He also became nostalgic and recollected those days (around 20 years ago) when the Kothandapani Audio laboratories (the venue of the Meet) was built. He mentioned that it was one of his friends who had heard that the site was available for purchase and had recommended to SPB to purchase the same (that was many years ago) and build a recording studio. Initially it seems the Legend had declined the proposal citing financial constraints. However his friends came together especially his close friend Radhakrishnan from Madurai who went ahead and paid Rs.30,000 as token advance for the land and handed over the document to SPB and asked him to do whatever he liked with it. This effort & initiative of his friend had forced SPB to embark on building this monument in the form of an Audio Laboratory and naming it on his Mentor Shri.Kothandapani. He also specifically mentioned that every brick of the building had his friend Radhakrishnan’s blood and sweat as his friend had shifted from Madurai to Chennai for this purpose and had completed it in a record 6 months time. The unfortunate thing, he mentioned, was that his friend was no more when the inauguration ceremony took place. He citied this as one of the reasons for not celebrating his birthday every year and also for not being available to others for getting greeted on that day. To make it lighter he pointed out certain ardent fans like Covai Ravee however somehow get hold of his whereabouts and wished him each year on his birthday. He felt that they would make good FBI or CBI agents. He also felt happy for all the love and affection showered on him by his fans. He was appreciative of the performance of the fans who sang his numbers. Apart from Kalpana & Satish whom he called professionals, he was impressed with all fans who sang his songs and the enthusiasm that accompanied their singing. He specifically congratulated the child performers namely Kumari Sheela (the niece of Mr.Srinivas, an ardent SPB fan from Yelloru and who has been generously donating big amounts for charity year after year) who performed a kuchipudi dance and Master Srinivasa Raghavan (son of our Seshadhri) who played a few English numbers on the keyboard. He felt it was better having a performance like this than him talking all the time. He suggested that fans also sing good songs of other singers as well. He was also very appreciative of the good charity work being done by the Fans association and he felt proud in lending his name for such good causes. He pleaded with one and all never to let this good chain break but continue even in his absence later. He also promised that he will continue giving good songs till his vocal cords support him and that he would stop singing the day when he is not good (LET US PRAY TO GOD THAT THIS NEVER HAPPENS). He still felt that even though he may not possess the range of his yesteryears, he was right now performing at 95% range. This should be happy news coming from the man himself and one that should make all of us happy for many more years to come. He particularly mentioned that he was overwhelmed by the love and affection of all his fans who had taken time from their busy schedules and attending this meet. He was however more overwhelmed by the love of fans from Karnataka whom he had termed as being crazy about him and who would give their life for him. While on this, he was very appreciative of the tremendous efforts of his fans namely Narayan & Abubakkar etc to whom he expressed his thanks for putting in efforts to collect his songs from all remote parts of South India and compile the same in an effort to create a total database of his songs (he went to the extent of saying that they have become his reference books for any rare songs that he wanted for any of his concerts. When he needed he would get it over internet from them in a few minutes. Such was the efforts that these fans have taken and for which the Legend expressed his gratitude). He wanted this exercise on database to be done as it would be a great reference guide for the upcoming singers as they could learn how he (SPB) had performed badly in his younger years and how he had become better & better and then very good in the later years. He felt that the database of his songs would guide the present young singers who had abundant talent in not committing such mistakes as his. He was of the opinion that Kalpana who sang in the event was very much talented and that the industry had not tapped her potential to the hilt. He admitted that she was much more knowledgeable than himself & well learnt with proficiency in Carnatic & Hindustani genres of music and he praised her in saying that she had sung his sings better than him during the Meet (what magnanimity – no one in the world will never ever say such words as our Legend)
He expressed surprise on how fans like Ashok, Seshadri etc could find time to organize such an elaborate event involving identification of the right institution for contributions and visiting them to determine their authenticity and their needs and also getting the “minus 1 tracks” organized for the performers. Finally on behalf of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation, he gave away mementos to the chief organizing committee members. When Ashok wanted SPB to present memento to SPB’s brother and also Mr.Vittal who had helped out at the Audio Lab, the Legend mentioned that it was their duty and declined any memento for them.

Next, we had the final closing off event in the form of a Website inauguration. As mentioned in the earlier paragraph efforts are on for compiling all of SPB songs and towards this initiative, a set of Bangalore Fans have created a website with the help of a professional agency. A sample demo was given on using this website. One could search for details of SPB songs compiled so far and download songs as available or could also upload details of rare songs that one came across. By this, the database records can go larger thereby encompassing more number of SPB songs. Hope fans will support this endeavour by including details of the song into this website for the benefit of one and all

We finally had the Legend heed to the request of one of the fans (Balaji who had asked him to sing Sankarabharanam song earlier) and we were treated to a few lines of the “Sankara nadha…….”. When SPB completed singing it, the fan was overwhelmed with emotion to the extent that he said to SPB “You are my Sankara”. This phrase really humbled the Legend but he promptly replied “If I am Sankara, then you are my son Balasubramaniam”. That resulted in a great round of applause. In fact Balaji was accompanied by his mother who was getting embarrassed with the childish behaviour of her son. The Great Human Being that he is, our SPB promptly convinced the mother not to get embarrassed with her son saying that one rarely gets blessed with a son who lives his entire life as a child not hurting others and being innocent always and a child at heart. It was a heart warming & heart touching moment.

With this, the great Meet came to a close formally at around 2.30pm and all the Fans then were treated to a typical Chennai Lunch which also provided an opportunity to interact with one another and appreciate the organizers and performers of the day.

SPB and The Drunkard Raaga by Balarykar

Many singers have successfully sung the drunkard songs. Lets see how they have all fared.Rafis in your face drunkard song "Choo Lena Do Nazuk Hoothon" gives that necessary courage for a drunkard to coerce his wife into drinking. Its another matter that they fail almost always without realising that they are not the late Rajkumar to succeed. Rafi's another song "Koi Saagar Dil Ko Behlata Nahin" truly conveys the message that no amount of alcoholism will ever help to overcome a heart break. Nights are longer than days. Yes, Einstein also confirms the same in "Din Dhal Jaye".Kishore Kumar has his own share of deaddictable songs, especially play backed for the legends Amitabh Bachhan and Rajesh Khanna, though we will not list them here for lack of appropriate e-space. His gem "Peenewalon ka peene ka bahana chahiye" from the movie "Haath Ki Safai" for Randheer Kapoor reflects that the drunkard is like a buffalo. Just like the buffalo continues its walk irrespective of the season, so does the drunkard irrespective the emotive state. A lesser known, but a really good d-song of Kishore Kumar is from the Mithun Chakravarty starrer "Daata" and the song is "Roona dhona chod chod de" in which he urges the damsel to forget all the sadness and raise the drinks towards the heaven. Its questionable though how a drunkard can go to heaven. Oops! Of course, from hell a toast can be raised in the direction of the heaven. Madness is the way out. A simple proof is that the poet says the fire arising of sparks can be extinguished but not the ones thats lighted from the rains. Thats the way its said in "Chingari Koi Bhadke" at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpM0jPd6-7w .Talking of the damsels and the drinks brings us the legend Pankaj Udhas. His truly inspiring song (strictly for the drunkaaards only) "Huwi bahut hi mehengi sharaab, ke thodi thodi piya karo, piyo magar rakho hisab, ke thodi thodi piya karo" tells us how to handle the inflation smartly. Yes, inflation DOES affect the drunkards. Why did you ever assume that there is no Drunkonomics in the first place? Going through all the Pankaj Udhas songs one is led to believe that the brothel is truly a good place to hang out and the prostitutes are women of wisdom!Yes, this article is not at all about any of the singers mentioned above. Please forgive me for my drunkard walk. Probabilists have been eternally inspired by the random (drunkard) walk and will swear that a simple application of the Borel-Cantelli lemma shows that the below listed events occur infinitely often with probability one (that is, infinite recurrence is a certainty):(a) a probabilist returning to the drunkard (random) walk;(b) a drunkard returning to the wine shop;(c) the author of this article mentioning SPB.

Yes! I am writing this article about SPB which when expanded gives us infinite letters, viz., Sripathi Panditharudalaya Balasubrahmanyam, and I have always wondered why the name "Balasubrahmanyam" is written in infinite different ways though there is enough empirical evidence that each of those variations have been repeated infinite times. I now swear to stick to SPB only. By now the reader is supposed to have understood that the "Drunkard Raaga" is infinite dimensional. SPB has managed to sing the most variations within Drunkard Raaga. While there have been many singers who use this raaga, most of them commit the cardinal sin of singing the Drunkard Raaga. They just don't realise that one does not sing in this raaga. Its the ultimate truth in this universe that the drunkard raaga gets in your body, soul, and everything within, and then whatever you say/sing/blabber/shut-up, it is the DRUNKARD RAAGA. Lets explain this raaga a bit more.The Drunkard Raaga has two components. First is the signal, which has a format. This format may be simple, complex, or chaotic. Whatever the format, the functionality is always known. To be more specific, its like a computer program which can do whatever its been instructed to do. There is no surprise here, though we all appreciate it. Many singers do this first step with grace. And then comes the cardinal sin. They all stop here only without bothering about the second component. This step is also like the half part of the drunkard walk. The drunkard has to walk and many people tend to do it without ever realising that the direction has no 'left' or 'right' written on it. So after a while they are all doing either a right or a left. This is where the great SPB excels. That damned raaga is in him which enables him to erase the 'left' and 'right' each time he takes a step. Thus the picture is complete and this is really the second component of the drunkard raaga. The ability to erase the names is what is famously known to the probabilists as the 'White Noise'. This white noise effect is truly there in almost all the drunkard songs of SPB. Having done all the theory of the drunkard raaga in SPB, now lets have a sample of some of his drunkard walk.To begin with, let it be made very clear that the focus here is SPB's drunkard walks in hindi. This language has not exactly been a forte of his. Still, we will be satisfied with this "Dariya". The movie is "Ek Hi Bhool" and the walk begins at "Bekhudi Ka Bada Sahara Hai". See how uncertainly he goes around it and feel the noise at "Kitne halki hai, kitni boojhal hai, koi aurat nahin ye botal hain,band isme jahan saara hai", and then back to "Bekhudi Ka Bada Sahara Hai". Listen how well, noisily in truth, he reverts to "Beekhudi kaa". I am sure that Anand Bakshi must have been wondering who wrote those lines. Spot on the bang SPB, bang on the spot, SPB. The song was cast on Jeetendra. In this entire song, the feel is of having drunk whiskey. Don?t ask me how.There has been this flop of a movie called "Santaan". This movie was completed in a record time and again Jeetendra comes to do that walk. The situation is that the son ditches parents, and the father realises that Tulsi and Ved Vyas wrote simple encyclopedic facts on Ramayan and Mahabharat. The perennial challenge was to write something about the parents struggle. And thus goes the song "Tulsi ne Ramayan Likhi, Ved Vyas ne mahabharat. Kyun kisine kabhi naa likhi, maa baap ki kahani". The music by Anand-Milind had probably been a decade late. Nevertheless, it powers into the drunkard performance of SPB. Upset with the iconic saints, this has a shade of DesiDaru. After all, the character is not rich guy. I know you are missing that there is no youtube link.Lets be done away with Anand-Milind. If they had Sameers company in the previous song, the great Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote the truly noisy words "Banke bigad gaya kaam, very sorry, I am so sorry, ulte huwe badnam, very sorry, I am so sorry". I am not too sure if it was picturised on Salman Khan or Amjad Khan, or both. It had its roots in the telugu movie "Prema" where SPB did the honors earlier. Both are good and intoxicating. Some songs are lost and not yet captured at youtube.A mother is singing rhymes to put the baby in the world of dreams. And a bastard listens to it. How does he feel? The torment, that anguish, justified frustrations, etc, all in the company of a huge quantitative arrack of daru is capture here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC3Qzwuqg4g . The movie is Benaam Badshaah and Laxmikant-Pyarelal are at it again.A lover separated from his rich princess is tormented and is in search of the mirage in the Sahara desert. Unsurprisingly, that mirage for a broken heart is perennially a bar room where Mithun Chakravarty is seeking solace. Though the actor is striving and showing the desi version, the song actually reflects the rum(ification) and Alka Yagnik complements like a true princess missing her abode. This pair has given such marvelous duets that I actually feel its one of the most underestimated duet pair in the hindi film world. Trust me, its so underestimated that it puts to shame even the less due that is generally given to SPB in bollywood. Well, thats another article in waiting from the author. I hereby solemnly declare that once the detoxification of this article occurs, this will be certainly evaluated to the ranks it should be. Nadeem-Shravan are among the very few who gave too good songs with SPB.That "jeeye to jiye, kaise bin aapke" is probably the biggest hit drunkard song of SPB does not make it necessary that I should also bore you with it. Its popular, its everywhere. Whats there for me or you? I mean, come on. If anybody starts a random walk in the crowd, they must be kicked. I won't write more except thanks to Nadeem Shravan and of course Salman Khan.Women, especially from the subcontinent, hate the drinks and then the drunkards. It comes as no surprise that on one occassion, the drunkard could not take it any more. He is a mard first, and then a drunkard. So, there he goes. "Naa baaba na baaba, na baaba naa, aurat ka bharosa na baaba naa. haan baaba haan baba, haan baba haan, ye ek na do na teen, ye saari ki saari hai bewafa". Its important to understand here that though I am in the noisy state, its difficult for me to give up something thats rhyming and repetitive. Its really annoying that the reader thinks the noise won't like the signal. Its around the signal (drinks) that we owe our existence. So, jai ho signal ki. Just guess the lyricists state of mind and the torment he under went."Ek, Ek se Bhale Do". I do know that this is a song about unity and not about some stupid mindless walks. But I am blabbering about ek (SPB), and ek se bhale do (SPB with Kishore Kumar). Now add R.D. Burman on the top of it, and tie us to the chairs and keep Dimple Kapadia before us. You are certainly joking if you presume we won?t be intoxicated. Whew! Now, thats truly taking the square of a random walk and destroying sanity. Its fun to be insane. He he he! This 'scotch on the rocks' performance is known as ?Yun hi gaate raho? from the classic "Saagar" movie. Its so notorious that it converted a simple next-door girl name into a volumptous sexy babe. Smitha later became famous as "Silk Smitha". Donation to Flood Victims in AP/Karnataka

Dear friends,

I am happy to share with you that an amount of Rs 75000 has been donated to Indian Red Cross by SPB Fans Charitable Foundation for the flood relief activity in AP and a similar amount to The Red Cross, Karnataka.

On 31.10. 2009, four of our Hyderabad members of SPB Fans Charitable Foundation, i.e Chaitanya, Mangalampalli Vijay, Mrs Usha and myself have met Justice Lakshman Rao, State Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, AP State Branch, Hyderabad and handed over our donation cheque of Rs 75000 on behalf of SPB Fans Charitable Foundation. Justice Rao was extremely happy and appreciated our contribution and said that the money would be used genuinely for the flood relief activities. A letter of acknowledgement and reciept have been issued to us for the amount.

Justice Rao, went on to explain various activities of the IRC in AP and requested voluntary work for a couple of hours every week for participation in the social welfare causes being undertaken by IRC. He said if today's youth could spend even one hour per week for the society, we can build a better world.

He had personally enquired about the activities of the foundation and also about us individually. When we explained in details of our activities, he was very very appreciative of our Big Boss, Sri SPB and said that the fans of Sri SPB are doing a great job by helping the downtrodden and less privileged in the society thru charity work.

Having understood the interest, we made a call to Sri SPB and requested to speak to Justice Rao while we had donated the money. Justice Rao was very happy to speak to Sri SPB and expressed his deep appreciation and thankfulness for the donation and also for guiding the fans to the charity activities. He also wished Sri SPB a long life and great health. We also expressed with sincere thanks to Sri SPB for immediately obliging our request to speak to Justice Rao. It really made a lot of difference to the programme since Justice Rao had expressed his great happiness, having spoken to Sri SPB.

The meeting with Justice Rao has been coordinated by Sri Mohan Rao, Executive Secretary and Treasurer of IRC Hyderabad.

Four of us had a wonderful experience being a part of this noble gesture of SPB Fans Charitable Foundation for which we are thankful to Sri SPB and the managing committee members.

I sincerely thank our friends Chaitanya, Usha and Vijay M who have readily agreed to participate in the event and made it a real success.

Hi All

The Institution chosen was 'Indira Gandhi International Academy', which houses about 260 children studying from Standard 1 to PUC. These children are the wards of SriLankan refugees housed at various camps in India.

After shortlisting the list of requirements put forth by the school, we had supplied 130 Trunks [for the children to store their belongings], 10 desks with draws for teachers from standards 1 to 10. A Fridge, and a couple of Basket Ball Boards with Hoops and net.

Malarvannan, Prabhanjan & Arvind along with Toufeeq played a major role in scouting, bargaining and procuring the items. I think everyone will agree when I say, Malarvannan stood up and took the overall responsibility, Prabhanjan and Arvind Pitched in with great enthusiasm and they pulled it off really well. Kudos!!

Well, the school children had made a fabulous decoration - they had put up 'thoranam' right from the gate all the way up to the school, and made colourful designs with flowers, and a welcome message for our Guruji with different flowers - all in all a spellbinding decoration. Those who saw it would vouch for the beauty of the arrangement.

Our Guruji arrived at 7:30 AM sharp, got out of the car at the gate when he saw children lined up on both sides to welcome him, garland him etc. He was cordially welcomed by the founder Mr. Mohan, Ms. Lakshmi Gopinath - Founder Bright Society & a volunteer as well, and Ms. Chitra Rajasekhar.

Guruji was directly taken to the 'dining room' which had doubled up as the events rooms, where they had made a dias of sorts. After the welcome note by Ms. Lakshmi, the talent events started. It was truly impressive seeing the children perform so well. As Malar has already explained about this, let me skip a repeat.

Mr. Mohan welcomed our Guruji and spoke about their longing for their homeland, and made an impaasionate plea to Guruji to lend his voice to unite all Srilankan Tamils, as his voice was the one they all had grown up listening to.

Our Guruji, praised the children for all the effort, and mentioned that he too grew up listening to Radio Ceylon, which played not just Tamil songs, but also Hindi & other language songs. He spoke how language which is just a means of communication between people and that it should not end up becoming a barrier between them. He praised the school, teachers and Volunteers for all the effort they have put, and also the fact that a school for Sirlankan Tamils was setup in Karnataka. He spoke in a way to encourage Children in their lives ambitions.

His impromptu rendition of the song which Little Deepa wrote put us all on an emotional high. Many of our fans were seen feeling thrilled, and getting goose bumps [self included].

All Fans on their volition had sponsored the breakfast for the day on personal account - which was bread omlette, egg etc. The school authorities had graciously accepted our request to arrange for 'veg' breakfast for our Guruji. They had arranged a breakfast for all our fans, not just Guruji. Idli, vada, Pongal and Coffee. We all sat along with the children and had breakfast.

Then Guruji had a tete-a-tete with the fans. Prabhanjan gave Guruji his marriage invite. Prasad Babu informed that it was his marriage anniv, and Guruji promptly gave him a boquet... and then he left the venue at about 9:45 AM.

The event, in my humble opinion was a resounding success in all aspects.

I second what Prasad has said. I think it would be a very good gesture, and show people our fiundation is just not about donations but also that we take things we do seriously and whole heartedly in many way.

I am sure our man would indeed compose musc and sing those lyrics. For, everyone present knows that he said to Mr. Mohan 'I will compose music, sing and send this to you. You might use it in your 'unifying' attempts, or other song collections you put together. But, not many know that when he was just about to go back into the Airport at Departure Gate, he fumbled through all his pockets to find that one piece of paper, and as he found it he said :

"'Naan idhai paadi kodukkaren nu solli irukken sir. Adhaan yengayaavadhu misplace panniteno nu bhayandhuttean. Andha ponnu yezhudhinadhu. Record panni avangalukku anuppanum."
"I have promised to set tune to these lyrics by that girl; sing & send it to them. Thats why I was afraid if I had misplaced it. I have to record & send it to them" - Translation

Two ayurvedic physicians have produced a Tamil album featuring Malaysian and South Indian singers.

WE all have different tastes in music. Some of us love rock, while others, pop or jazz. Those who are more passionate about music will often take a step further, like Indian ayurvedic physicians Dr Radha Krishnan and Dr C.D. Siby, who produced a Tamil album.

What sets the album apart from others is that it features the voices of talented Malaysian and Indian singers.

Titled Nesippaya (Will You Love Me), the eight-track album features South India’s S.P. Balasubramaniam, Unni Menon, Rajesh Vijay, Madhu Balakrishnan and homegrown singers such as Alinda Alphonse, Preetha Prasad and Logeswaran.

The album, which took a year to put together, is released by Sopaanam Arts. All the songs, except for one by Unni Menon, were recorded in Kuala Lumpur, when the Indian singers were in town.

Forty-year-old Siby, who enjoys writing Tamil and Malayalee poems, penned the lyrics while Krishnan, 36, handled the music direction and composition.

For Siby, the album is proof that dreams can come true.

“I have loved music since young and it has been my childhood dream to produce an album. Nesippaya is evidence of my interest and desire to work in the music industry.

“I met Krishnan a few years back and through conversation, I discovered he was a keyboardist with a band in Kerala (South India) for 15 years. We clicked instantly due to our interest in Tamil music,” said Siby during an interview recently.

Krishnan chipped in: “Many find it hard to believe the album was conceptualised by two traditional Indian medicine specialists. And what makes it more interesting is we managed to rope in prolific South Indian singers like S.P. Bala and Unni Menon alongside local singers.”

Krishnan explained it was by chance that S.P. Bala, Kollywood’s top Tamil singer who has recorded over 40,000 songs throughout his 40-year career, agreed to sing the song, Azhagae ... Azhagae (Beautiful ... Beautiful).

“Bala did not hesitate to record the song. In fact, we were amazed that he managed to record it within an hour,” said Krishnan, a trained flautist.

“Perhaps this wasn’t a feat for him, considering he is said to have recorded 19 and 16 songs in Tamil and Hindi, respectively in a day. It has been an honour working with him – he was down-to-earth and jovial.”

Other notable singers featured on the album include Rajesh Vijay, 33, who has been singing Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam songs for Indian movies and Prasad, 40, a local stage actor.

According to Siby, Nesippaya is a collection of love songs which focuses on the raga (melodic modes used in Indian classical music).

“The album suits music lovers who appreciate soothing tunes with a hint of classic melodies. Hopefully, the songs will help shape the growth and music awareness of the youth and foster deeper bonds between Indian and Malaysian Tamil music,” said Kerala-born Siby, whose poems have been published widely in South Indian newspapers and magazines.

Not one to rest of their laurels, the passionate doctors are already planning their next project – releasing two devotional albums by year-end.

Nesippaya, selling at RM15 per CD, is available at Lotus Fivestar outlets nationwide.

He’s is one of the best playback singers in the country with more than 37,000 songs to his credit. He can add more life and style to a song than most singers in the industry. But those are not the only reasons why the SP Balasubramaniam fan club has grown in numbers over the years. It’s because of the man himself.

“We do not meet to just to discuss SPB’s songs and music. That is one part of it, but this club was formed because we want to imbibe SPB’s character in our lives, and absorb his good qualities,” says R Ashok, 33, an accountant with a software company, and member of the group. There are doctors, singers, software engineers, chemical engineers and more in this group.

Although the group was formed online in 2003, pretty soon the members started arranging for frequent meetings in the city. “We have evolved as a group. In the beginning, we just met and discussed his songs. But after a couple of years, we thought, why not learn from SPB. He is charitable and humble as a person. So we started going to orphanages and doing charitable work,” says Ashok.

Says S Seshadhri, 42, a software project manager and member of the group, “What drew me to this group is the fact that they do charitable work. It’s SPB’s character as much as his voice that makes me a fan. Even though he is so famous, he is the most down-to-earth celebrity I have seen, and does a lot of good work.”

On all “special” SPB days, like for instance his birthday, the group organises for members to meet and donate to a charity. Once a year, they also try to get the legendary singer to attend a meet. Then they have a meeting once in three months to discuss their charitable contributions. But apart from that, they meet on the second Saturday of every month between 3 pm and 6 pm at Natesan Park in T Nagar to talk about SPB, his songs, concerts, and events, and even share the technical details of a song or some little nugget of information they have just heard or read about him. “We also try and get tickets at a concession for members of the group,” says Ashok.

For a start, the coordinators of the Event need to be first congratulated for their superb efforts in making this event a grand success under the able guidance of the Foundation’s Managing Trustee Shri.Giridhar Raja. The event this year had lot of positives & highlights which should be first listed and then the actual narration can follow

Visit by SPB to Aadarana :

The Organising Committee of the Event grouped themselves into two. One, comprising Ramakrishna Rao, Chaitanya, Seshadri, Venkat and others, was at the Aadarana to receive the Legend at 9.30am.

Aadarana is an orphanage for young children and it caters to their daily needs and educational requirements. It has two divisions, one housing around 40 boys and the other around 25 girls. It is situated at Malakpet, Hyderabad. It is headed by Mr.Madhava Rao.

SPB was immensely happy to see the small kids rendering songs and performing dances for him. He was very touched by the way the orphanage is run and praised the Management a lot.

On behalf of the Foundation, the Legend handed over a month’s Grocery requirement, Fans, Tube lights & Kitchen Utilities like Cookers/Grinder as needed by the Institution.

Chaitanya from Hyderabad had been instrumental in identifying this institution as a beneficiary. Seshadri & Venkat from Chennai had made a prior visit to Hyderabad a few weeks before the Meet to decide on selection and requirements

Registration of Attendees :

The other group of the Organising Committee comprising of Ashok, Madhumita & Dasaradhi was at the Venue with Ashok to give final touches to the arrangements and the other two to take care of the registration formalities.

The Registration of Members for the Foundation was really encouraging and it gives great pleasure to note that around 20 registered themselves as Members of the Foundation. The best part of it was that the sister-in-law of SPB and her husband along with one of the SPB’s Hyderabad friends also registered themselves as Members of the Foundation towards the end of the Event. This clearly showed that the message floated by the Foundation and the good encouraging words from the Legend about the Foundation had a great impact on those present at the event.

TEA TIME : 10.45 TO 11.00am

Invocation Song :

Satish Kumar – a college Student and an ardent fan of SPB and also a nephew of Foundation Committee Member Ashok, was given the honour of rendering the Invocation song.

He sang a devotional number from the Tamil film Vietnam Colony, which was originally sung by Bombay Jayashree.

It was a very soulful rendering on his part and it instantly captured the attention of SPB who at that time was in the process of autographing the photographs on the diaries (which were to be presented as compliments later). One could find the Legend visibly appreciating the rendering.

He complimented the singer abundantly and wished him well. Such was his magnanimity that towards the end of the show, he called Satish back on to the stage and presented him with a loving and affectionate embrace as a token of his appreciation.

He was quick to understand that Satish had had carnatic training and he impressed upon him that he should go on further and reach great heights.

Welcome Address :

Ramakrishna Rao from Hyderabad, the leader of the Hyderabad team which had coordinated for the event, gave the opening address. He welcomed all the participants and went on to brief about the events that took place during the visit of SPB to the Orphanage.

He also welcomed SPB who in spite of his busy schedule had spared time to be with his fans.

He also briefed about the efforts that had gone into the planning and activities that had gone into setting up this show at Hyderabad

Self Introduction of Attendees :

In this meet, all the participants were given the chance of introducing themselves to others.

Everyone introduced by mentioning their name, place of residence, profession with some of the excited fans stating that they were happy being there at the event.

Photograph Session with the Legend :

This session turned out to be the most sought after one as it brought the fans physically closer to the Legend and the moment was to be etched in print for a lifetime and also to serve as a memento.

This time, it was different, different in the sense that he got himself as close as possible to the fans by wrapping his huge hands around the shoulders of the Fans. This had never happened in the earlier meets. It served to be a special moment to cherish forever.

Fans were scampering around to get to him first. Some had their own cameras handed over to others to capture the delightful moment. Smiles were abounding on the faces. Some even took the liberty of getting photographed twice with the Great human being.

During this session the fans were also given a complimentary diary by SPB on behalf of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation. This diary had a photograph pasted on its front inner cover with an autograph by the Legend. It also had a brief note about the Foundation and its activities

Video Presentation of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation Activities
One of the Objectives of the Annual Meets is to create a forum wherein the Fans could meet up with the Legend and spend time with him.

The other important objective is to make known to all fans, the existence of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation and its philanthropic activities, so that many more fans realize the great work that is being done in the name of the Legend’s fans. The purpose is to have more fans registering in the Foundation wherein they get the opportunity to serve the society. This is the ultimate wish of our SPB too, for he does not want the union of fans with him to be just limited to interactions. His wish is that this union should serve the society too.

Towards this, a video show of some of the Charity events organized by the Foundation was presented on the screen. We had the trustees of Chennapuri Annaadan Samajam , an orphanage in Chennai talking about their institution and the help that the SPB Fans Foundation had extended to them. We also had Dr.Ambika, Head of RASA, a school for Special Children, talking about the use of theatrics and songs in the development of physically & mentally challenged children and adults. She expressed her thanks to the Foundation for helping them out by providing some of their requirements

Surprise Celebrity Video Presentation :

It has now become a standard agenda in the Annual Meets since 2007 to have video clips presented on celebrities talking about the Legend and his attributes.

Our SPB had many a time expressed that these sessions made him feel embarrassed – hearing others talking so good about him when he felt that he was just an ordinary human being who had taken to singing only as a profession to earn his bread & butter.

This time, when the session was announced, he got up from the dais and walked over to the front row of the seating arrangements for watching the video show and in the process he quipped “What missiles do you have in store for me this time” “Let me face the first missile”

What followed next was indeed a surprise to most of the fans present as only a few had been involved in the making of the Celebrities videos.

First in line, was the video of Actor Venkatesh speaking on our Legend (It is understood that Chaitanya from Hyderabad was the man who got hold of the actor’s appointment and had made all arrangement for the video shoot). The excerpts from the video is as follows
Balu Garu has sung many lovely songs for me. One of most memorable one is the Priyathama na hrudhayama in the film Prema. He has sung it with so much passion that whenever I listen to it I am moved. He also played a small role in that film. I have made it a practice that at least one song in my film should be sung by him. Sometimes when it happened that he was very busy and found it difficult to fit in a song for my film in his schedule, I had pulled all strings to make him sing for me. Such is the impact he has on me. I also had the rare opportunity of having him in the role of my Father in the film Pavithra Bhandham and those were the times I will cherish forever. He is also a great human being. I understand that the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation formed in his name is doing good service to the society and I wish them all success in their endeavours

Next was Director K.Viswanath. His words went off like this
Baalu……Gaaru – I say so because I hved known him since his childhood as Baalu and have seen him grow leaps & bounds. He has grown to such a stature that I am forced to use …..Gaaru now eventhough he is always Baalu to me. He is called intimately by many others as Mani, Bala, SPB and so on. He is a very versatile artiste handling the wide repertoire of singing, dubbing, acting, anchoring & producing films. For Shankarabharanam, I wanted him to sing at least one song for the film and I am extremely happy that he sang all the songs. I wish him many more years of success. This SPB Charitable Trust formed in his name is doing lot of good activities and I wish them all success in their efforts

Singer and Small Screen Actor Mano followed next. His lines were
Known as Nagoor Babu, I am like the younger brother of Baalu Annayya. Our relationship dates back to more than 30 years when I used to be an assistant to Music Director Chakravarthy. I was the Pilot Singer during those times and used to teach Annayya the songs. I have grown listening to his songs a lot and I am blessed to be associated with him. Apart from being a great singer, he is also a very good human being. He never looked down on the junior artistes and treated all as his equals. One of the recent associations with him which I cherish was during our USA trip together in the year 2006. We were together for 21 days and we did 6 shows. We two were the male singers in the troupe and I can never forget how kind he was to me during that trip. During the trip, my wife also accompanied me and she found pleasure in preparing food and serving Annayya many times. This he remembered and thoughtfully mentioned it during one of the concerts by saying that I had taken care of him very well during the tour. That too, in front of a crowd numbering around 3000. I will never forget this kind gesture of his. I am very happy to note that this Foundation formed by his fans is doing noble activities serving the society. Recently they have donated a lakh of Rupees to a deaf & dumb school at Chengalpet, Chennai. This they have done in spite of their busy schedule. I think they are one big family with Annayya. I myself participate in such activities and I will try to help whenever possible. I wish them well in all their activities and my vandanam to Annayya.

The next celebrities were a pair and the siblings of our SPB – none other than Singer Shailaja and his other sister Kalyani
Shailaja :: Anna has been more of a father to us and we always looked up to him for guidance. He has taught me so much in singing. He was always a stickler for punctuality and he used to advise me that an artiste should practice a lot and should be well in time for a concert so that the public are not disappointed. Once I became a singer, we used to meet each other more on the outside than at home. Our meetings were generally at the recording studios both waiting to rush off to the next recording. During our childhood days, he used to take us to school and also bring us food. He was very naughty too. Once, we girls were playing card games at home well into the night. He came home at around 11.00pm and he too wanted to play with us. And he cheated a lot and when everything went against him he messed up the cards and quit the game. Another incident which is still fresh in memory was when he took us all to watch the English horror film EXORCIST. When we were back at home that night, we girls were all in the ground floor engaged in some chores. We were under the impression that Annayya had gone to the first floor to rest. Later, when we came out into the Hall, we found him standing at the bottom of the staircase. When we quizzed him what he was doing there, he said that he was waiting so that he could take us all upstairs lest we should be frightened to come up after having watched a horror movie. Such a brave man he was !!!!!! (Our SPB later jocularly said that his sisters had tarnished his image now before the fans)
Sister Kalyani spoke only a few words about her brother and it was more of a subset of the above

The final celebrity to speak on the video was none other than SPB’s close friend Maestro Ilayaraja. (Hats off to the members Seshadri & Ashok who had organized this interview)
IlayaRaja words about his close friend were
Our relationship dates to several years back. During those days, Baalu was looking for a harmonist to replace one of his regular players and I got introduced to him then through a common friend. I met him first at a school event and at that time he expressed his wish in forming an orchestra with me. During those times, we used to go on his scooter and visit Pappad Jamal in Chennai to get some gramophone records and tapes so that we could prepare the tunes for the songs that were to be played in our orchestra. Regarding his caliber, having been in the industry for 42 years is by itself a proof of his caliber. 42 years is not a small period in a singer’s life. He may have rendered most of my songs but he was equally used by many other music directors too. A singer is called upon to sing only if he is very good and what has happened is ample proof of his ability. Whatever events that have taken place between us on the personal side is between us and this is not a forum to share it. I wish him many more songs and awards in the years to come.

With that the celebrity Video show ended. Later SPB told us that the arrangements for the video graphing of IlayaRaja had gone on behind his back and that the culprit he understood later was his assistant Vittal who had arranged it all for the fans and that too without his knowledge. He was surprised that IlayaRaja had agreed to talk in the first place for he is known to be averse to giving interviews just like that. He applauded the perseverance of the Fans in getting it done and presenting the same to him

Question & Answers Session :

This session was also one of the most sought after one as this is when the Fans could interact one to one with the Legend.

Many of the fans requested him to sing a few lines of his songs and he delightfully heeded to their requests even though he commented that it was becoming more of a concert.

One of the lady fans asked him why was it that he always talked of the Tamil song “Aayiram Nilave Vaa” as having boosted his career when he had sung a few songs earlier to that. His answer was “Even though I had sung five songs in my first year 1969 in the Tamil Industry, it was this song that I had sung for MGR which made others recognize me. Imagine a 22 year old singing for a mega star like MGR. This meant that the singer had to be good. Moreover, MGR postponed the shooting of the song as I was not well and was down with severe fever on the day of the scheduled recording. It took me more than a month to recover and MGR had waited for me patiently to record the song with me. Till that day I was under the impression that the song would have been recorded with some other singer and the shooting would have gone ahead. This explains why this song forms a special part of my life”

Next, we had Murali from Chennai asking the Legend about the Audition song (a Rafi song) that he had sung when he was evaluated for Ek Duje Ke liye by Music Director Lakshmikanth Pyarelal. Murali also happens to be very ardent fan of Rafi and he has expressed this to our SPB quite a number of times in his emails to him and our SPB remembered it well and he mentioned that his fan used to send him email asking him to render at least one Rafi song in each concert. He also went ahead to announce that he was planning to do a full length Rafi concert in all the three states. This evoked visible happiness from those present.
He then went on to narrate about the Audition song. It seems that he had rendered a Rafi song composed by the Music Director himself and that our SPB had improvised on his own at some places. Lakshmikanth Pyarelal who was accompanying him on the Harmonium had stopped and had gazed at SPB curiously. He seems to have asked our SPB to stop and asked him if this was his song as it seemed to be different at some places. SPB had replied that it was his song and that he had improvised it. The MD had asked why and our Legend had charismatically replied that it was the way he sang. He ended it all by saying that the MD concluded with the words “After Rafi you are the only playback singer”. This drew a heavy round of applause from the gathering.

While on the subject of Rafi songs, he went on to talk about the strengths of Rafi. On the aspect of voice, he said that other singers like Kishore and Lata had better voice and range than Rafi’s. However when it came to exhibiting the emotions in a song Rafi was the Master. Tandem songs in particular wherein the same song was rendered by a female singer and male singer in solo, Rafi always excelled and scored over his counterpart. He went on to cite an example of “Ehe saan tere“ wherein he highlighted the uniqueness of Rafi in rendering the word “Mohabat..” towards the middle of the song. This he said came from the soul and the Rafi the master excelled at it. SPB confessed that it was this style of Rafi which he had imbibed and adopted in this singing. He finally said that anything emanating from the soul would have to be beautiful.

When Murali opined that, after Rafi, SPB was considered the next greatest singer, our SPB was immediate to in replying that “Place Rafi at the top and I don’t mind having anyone below him. Only a real great singer can feel so about another great singer. Hats off to the Legend.

One of the fans asked him about his unsung song series wherein earlier he had recorded his favourite songs of other singers. SPB told that it had happened as a one-off case and that he was not interested in doing it anymore as it may not be taken in the right perspective by many. However, he revealed that he was in the process of re-recording his own songs of his early days using the current digital technology and that he had completed about 15 songs and would be completing 50 songs shortly. He felt sad that the original singers like Susheela and Janaki were not able to accompany him in this re-recording exercise as they were not in their elements now. However he was going ahead with some of the good and new upcoming singers

One of the Fans from Karnataka asked him about his favourite song in Kannada. Our SPB replied that it was quite difficult to pick from such a vast list. He however came out with the song “Jothe iyile..” composed by IlayaRaja 30 years back and a few other songs as well and sang a few lines of these.

A young girl in the gathering wanted to sing a Tamil song with him and he obliged by accompanying her. What a Great Human being he is. Honouring the feelings of the fans.

He also made a mention that the song Priyathama Na Hrudhayama which Actor Venkatesh had talked about was also very close to his heart. He said that he felt heavy at the heart whenever he sang the song and said that the filming of the song was a very painful affair as it had lot of pathos embedded into it.

We had one young romantic fan express that SPB had become a integrated part of his life. SPB immediately had asked him if he was in love with a girl. The young man hesitated a bit which revealed that it was so. The boy went on to say that she was also an SPB fan and that they had come together due to SPB influence on them. Our SPB was quick to add humour by warning the youngster not to talk too much about him to her lest she should fall in love with him rather than the boy.

This evoked a hearty round of applause from the gathering. Our SPB was also quick to point out that two of his fans Venkat & Priya (from Chennai who were present at the event) had come together through this SPB Fans Group and had tied the knot recently. He wished that they would bless the Group with one more fan shortly. SPB was then asked to present a small gift to the newly married couple on behalf of the Foundation.

One of the fans was curious to know the exact number of songs that the Legend had sung. To that, our SPB emphatically replied “35000, I am quite sure about it, but some people exaggerate it to be 40,000 & 50,000 which is not true”. While on this subject, he praised the efforts of the Banglorean Fans R.G.Narayan and Rajkumar who were putting in tremendous efforts to compile his entire collection of songs. He mentioned that he had handed over a lot of his song books to them dating back to 1970s. He also went on to say that R.G.Narayan was so embedded in this exercise that he is traveling to remote parts of Tamilnadu and other states whenever he got information that someone possessed a collection of SPB’s songs. He said that he would be ever grateful to have such fans. At this point, RGN was humble enough to mention that there was another fan Abubkakar from Pondicherry who was indeed putting in more efforts than he, for the collection of songs. SPB also praised Rajkumar for helping him out with his laptop problems whenever he was in town. On a lighter vein, he warned Rajkumar not to put on weight lest he should become immobile like his secretary Vittal who had joined him as a lean person and who had become quite fat now.

We also had Covai Ravee from Coimbatore trying his best to cajole SPB to sing a song “Bhoomadevi pole..” from a Tamil movie “Panchcha kalyani” but our SPB laughed away this effort saying he wondered if such a film was ever made. One can excuse him for not remembering the song for such is the spread of his achievements. He also pointed out that he had found a remarkable improvement in the English of Covai Ravee. He recalled those days when Ravee could not utter even a few words in English. Nowadays he was happy to note that he had improved a lot.

Many more questions were asked and points discussed but it would be impossible to narrate all.

Finally a few words on what our SPB felt about the event. He was very happy with the quality of the gathering. Even though the number of attendees was not much, he felt that it was more like a family meet unlike the formal meet that actors have with a huge crowd gathering. He was very appreciative of the fact that many of the fans had come in from far & wide and that he was honoured to be showered with the love and affection of the fans. He was much pleased that his fans were involved in charity events and he said that he had watched the Foundation grow in stature year after year and had grown to a stage where it could donate a lakh of rupees to a needy institution. He crowned it all by saying “EVEN IN MY NEXT BIRTH, I WANT TO BE BORN AS SPB THE SINGER AND SWIM IN THE OCEAN OF YOUR LOVE & AFFECTION” What more can one ask for.

Note : The event was also graced by the noted Telugu singer, anchor and dubbing artiste Sunitha and by some close friends and relatives of his, namely his sister-in-law and her husband. Towards the end, SPB called on Sunitha to come on stage and render a song and the singer obliged shyly.

Press Meet :

Our SPB also spent some time answering questions from the local media persons who were also invited for the event in order to cover the event and publish it in their newspapers. Fans can watch out for clippings about the event in the newspapers

Buffet Lunch :

The event came to a pleasant end with a wonderful buffet lunch. Thanks to Ramakrishna Rao the coordinator of the event for taking care of the hotel arrangements and also to the management of the Hotel Taj Mahal.

The highlight of this session was that our beloved SPB also had lunch along with the fans. This is the first time that lunch was arranged in an Annual Meet. All the earlier meets had taken place either in the evenings or very early in the morning and hence a high tea had sufficed then.

One could see him enjoy his lunch with his friends and closer ones. Some of the Fans grouped around him while he was having lunch and were fortunate to hear him narrate the stories of his younger days when he along with his friends used to collect money somehow through mischievous means in order to visit the cinema halls or for some other secretive purposes. One could also hear him narrating his first association with his mentor and guide Shri.Kothandapani who had been instrumental in visualising a great future for him and guiding him towards it and had emphatically predicted that if disciplined he would rule the industry for more than 40 years. His prophecy had become a reality when there came a time that SPB was forced to refuse an offer for singing for his mentor himself because of his busy schedules. SPB wondered how he was able to do that to his mentor but it seems that Shri.Kothanadapani did not feel offended but rather quite pleased - for his prophecy that SPB would one day become a very busy singer had come true. And more true, he is now well into the fifth decade as predicted by his mentor. When the singer Sunita who was sitting nearby asked him if it was possible for a singer to have any goals in the present scenario when good songs were becoming a rarity, he replied that she had to identify a good music director and ensure that she gets chance to sing his compositions more. This could help her in reaching her goal. A valid bit of advice it was from the Legend.

With the Lunch session coming to an end, everyone disbursed quite content and happy in having spent a wonderful few hours with the Great Human Being

Being Balasubrahmanyam: The perfectionist

Posting an interview of our guruji “Being Balasubrahmanyam: The perfectionist” was broadcasted yesterday at 10.30 pm to 11 pm on CNN IBN channel.

I am very thankful to Mr. Ashok for his quick sms to me & other fans. So if anybody missed that interview, watch it here..

The Tamil and Telugu moviegoers were familiar with his deep voice and though he had already got a national award in 1979, he became extremely popular because of the songs in the film Ek Duuje Ke Liye in 1981.

Anuradha SenGupta: Let me start by talking about a movie which helped the rest of India discover you. You know which one I am talking about.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Yes, Ek Duuje Ke Liye.

Anuradha SenGupta: 1981, Ek Duuje Ke Liye.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Prior to Ek Duuje Ke Liye, I sung in couple of dubbed films from Tamil or Telugu to Hindi. The journey was made but not straight into the nucleus actually. When I was at a concert tour in US, suddenly Prasad ji called me.

He somehow caught hold of my number and called and he said, ‘You have to break your journey in Mumbai Baalu because we are making a film, the Hindi version of a Telugu film in which you have sung’ and he said ‘Mr Balachander wants you to sing in the film. My music directors Lakshmikant Pyarelal want to meet you’ and actually Lakshmi ji was there and he asked me to sing a Hindi song.

Anuradha SenGupta: What did you sing? Do you remember?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: I sang their number only from Dosti, Jaane walon zara, mud ke dekho mujhe.... That was a comfortable number, which I was used to doing on stages prior to my entry into the films. Then he asked me to sing another number, I sang the title number from Mere Mehboob. He was not very convinced. He said he would get back to me. That is exactly what he said. I too was very apprehensive. I did not even dream of it, so even if it fizzled, I would not feel too bad about it.

Then I went back and Balachander was adamant that I should sing in his film. Even if there is a problem in my pronunciation, he said the character himself is a Tamil person in the film. He said it should not be a problem at all. Since then, I have sung in many films and no one has found fault even in my pronunciation. So, that was my entry into the Hindi film music.

Anuradha SenGupta: You have won six National awards and one of it was for the film Ek Duuje Ke Liye.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Yes, Tere mere beech mein...

Anuradha SenGupta: Yes, but can I tell you the song that I still remember and love, was picturised on Kamal Hassan and Rati Agnihotri in the lift.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Mere Jeevan saathi…! That song was fun. We had a very nice time and moreover those days, there was live recording with the orchestra and even the musicians felt so nice while recording it.

Anuradha SenGupta: It is an energy which in itself gives you a high. Isn’t it?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Even in a cubicle, through a glass, if you look at the musicians, and you give your feedback, it is an amazing feeling.

Anuradha SenGupta: It is the feeling of the feedback that is coming instantly from everyone around.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: You get so much of energy. That is what we are losing now. For a beginner, when you start your career, it is very important to have the presence of senior singers, co-singers, musicians etc. There are lots of corrections and improvisations to be made and by the presence of these people, you feel you have some support. That is missing now. Most of the times, these days, we don’t even have the music directors present in the recording studios. Now, everything is so fixed and stipulated. These are small compromises one has to make, but at the same time, there are some advantages also. You save a lot of time.

Anuradha SenGupta: You can do more work.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: You don’t have to strain yourself. When there is an advantage, there is always a disadvantage following it. All said and done, we have to move with time.

In 1989, SP Balasubrahmanyam sang for Salman Khan in Maine Pyaar Kiya and the hit connection was made endearing him even further to Hindi movie goers.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: When it happens, it happens! They thought they needed a voice that was not too heard of in Hindi. Though I was quite popular before Maine Pyaar Kiya, my voice was heard, but not overheard yet. All the songs made a lot of difference and then came Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and the other subsequent films. The best thing is that the music should become a hit, only then a voice will be heard. And the combination here became successful. Even out of Rajshri films, the other film, the song, Dekha Hai Pehli Baar... from the film Saajan became a hit. It was pure luck. There are no reasons for certain things. I feel that things just happen. Like my becoming a singer!

Anuradha SenGupta: Yes, we lost an engineer to get a singer. Isn’t it?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: My dream was to become an engineer.

Anuradha SenGupta: Did you complete studying engineering?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: No, one more year is left.

Anuradha SenGupta: Just gave it up.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: For three years, I did both studying and singing but it was very difficult. Then I had to take a decision. I thought that if it does not work well in music, I could go back and finish my engineering. But with singing, I may not get a chance again. I might get late. So, the industry never allowed me to go back and study.

SP Balasubrahmanyam holds a record for recording most number of songs. He is amused with the fact how people keep inflating the number from around 36, 000 that he says it is, to 39,000 and even 50,000. Though he is not working towards any records, he says that the numbers do mean something.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Even at the age of 62, even after 42 years of singing, I everyday record at least two songs, unless I feel lethargic. That means that I am still in the race. And I am still able to give what my music directors are asking for. That feeling gives you satisfaction. It is not the numbers but the fact that I am able to shell out what my directors’ want. I think even at 62, I am very comfortable in going out and doing shows and singing.

Anuradha SenGupta: Shivaji was the big hit. Balle Lakka, the Rajini introduction song as they call it. You did that. But are you now consciously doing less work?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: No, not at all. Usually if you ask a celebrity whose numbers come down, they say, ‘I am very selective and choosy. I am doing so many shows’ and so on. However, let me not talk like that. It is a natural process. After four decades, we have seen two generations of singers and actors who have come up.

They have caught the attention of the audience and filmmakers. But I am still shoulder-to-shoulder with them. But with time, the number of songs does come down. Thee only way I can say I have cut down, is because I am a little conscious of the content of the songs now. I know I am doing my job for a commercial purpose, but there should be a level below which I should not go.

Anuradha SenGupta: On an average, over 700 songs a year, I am guessing that everyone wanted a bit of SP Balasubrahmanyam. So, why did he say yes to them? Is it because he wanted to make hay while the sun shines or is it because it becomes difficult to say a no.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: The second one is right. Till today my younger brother Kamal Hassan tells me that I should learn to say no. I have not sung songs to make a record. It just happened. The 19 songs day recording was with a senior colleague Sushila ji. We were going to US for a concert in 1977. We were literally the only two singers who were known there at that time. So, on the last day before leaving, we started at 8 30 in the morning and ended at about 1 30 in the early hours, with one hour lunch break.

Anuradha SenGupta: How does an artist cope up with this?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Creativity was not the question because they were simple songs. I was 46 then and the energy levels were very high. I still enjoy what I do. I don’t do what I don’t enjoy. I want to tell my viewers and friends that they should not get carried away with this 36,000 songs record. I just count on how many good numbers I have sung. Whenever I listen to my songs, I carefully listen to how many mistakes I have made. Everyone says that I have become senile and that I calculate everything. Even if there is a little mistake in some note, one tends to feel the world has come to an end. I also know that no body is perfect. Even the best singers tend to go wrong at times. But as much as humanly possible, I want to be perfect.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Everyone thinks that I am Tamil. But I am actually from Andhra.

Anuradha SenGupta: You have to prove that by singing a couple of lines from a Telugu song.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Sankarabharanam is good enough to prove that.

Anuradha SenGupta: It is classical music and you are not a trained classical singer.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Until Sankarabharanam people used to greet me by saying, ‘Hi Baalu’, but after that they greeted me with joined hands and said ‘Hello Baalu’.

Besides singing SP Balasubrahmanyam is an actor, composer, TV host and a dubbing artist. His output is as prolific as it is varied.

Anuradha SenGupta: I heard you said somewhere that every singer is an actor. Singing in front of the microphone is acting. But unlike every singer, though there have been some notable singers who have acted, you are also an actor. Why did you act in Mohammed-Bin-Tughlaq?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: First tell me how much homework have you done for this interview. From where did you get these lines? I appreciate your work. Anyway, from my younger days I have been acting in school days. It just happened when I started my Telugu film career. The second year after my entry, there was a film where a famous singer has to come and sing a song for an occasion in the film. I was young. I was 21 at that time. I was quite handsome at that time. They thought that I should enact the song sung by me by me. It was the first time that I faced a camera. Couple of my friends who became directors, they knew that there is a lively person in me who could act. So, I started doing some cameos. Then they became bigger roles. But I was very conscious while I was doing these roles. I wanted to fit the role that I did. I got a couple of awards that time for my acting.

Anuradha SenGupta: I saw you dance with Prabhu Deva in a film. You have done it all. Isn’t it?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: I never thought that I would be dancing in the film. The director and Prabhu Deva were so secretive about it. One day they just told me that I was going to dance that day. I asked if I was dancing with him. He said that what he does while he runs around in the set, I should stay put in one place and do it. Somehow, I did it and I enjoyed it.

Anuradha SenGupta: When you sing for Rajinikanth, or Kamal Hassan, I don’t think you are trying to sound like they are singing. Am I right?

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Most people think that I change my voice for actors that I sing for. But that is not right. You are absolutely correct. The style can be different. I just try to get the vibrancy of actors in my singing. When I sing a romantic number for Kamal, I try to get the style in my singing. I mostly sung for them. It also helped me to dub them properly. Naturally, people suggest that a singer should not do anything more than singing as it affects the vocal chords.

My younger brother screams at me for taking up dubbing and other things. But I get carried away. No other singer has undergone a surgery like the way I underwent because of all this. I had to get a surgery twice on my vocal chords. I miss a lot of things.

I miss my personal life. I did not see my children growing up. It is so sad. I was working like a mad guy. I pity my wife. She was very young when I got married to her. You won’t believe she was 15 and I was 20 when we got married. I did not know at that young age how to manage my work and time and I could not afford to keep a manager at that time. But, now I am giving 200 per cent to my family.

Anuradha SenGupta: You are trying to make up now.

SP Balasubrahmanyam: Now they want me out of the house. They have had too much of me.

Anuradha SenGupta: The sun is setting and as we close, will you sing a few lines for us.

In a grand and opulent style the four top playback singers of this nation Dr.P.B.Srinivas, P.Susheela, S.Janaki and Dr.S.P.Balasubramaniam were felicitated by producer of 'Ganga Cauvery' R.V.Venkatappa at the audio release of the film at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall in Bangalore on Thursday evening.

It was a touching felicitation function and the first audio release of a film made by S.P.Balasubramaniam in Kannada. Symbolizing Ganga and Cauvery rivers a set was erected by art director Hosmane Murthy at the audio release function.

Addressing on this occasion noted playback singer Dr.SPB said,” The love and affection what he got from Karnataka has not come for him from any other part of the country. Dr.PB Srinivas, S.Janaki and P.Susheela and me are all non Kannadigas yet the people of Karnataka showed immense love for the talent. They simply loved our songs. This is admirable said SP Balasubramaniam. I have learnt so many things in my profession from PBSji, Janakiamma and Susheelamma. Among them the humbleness is most important”.

This event happend a little over a month ago. The function was held towards the audio release of the film 'Ganga Kaveri', featuring the producer Mr. R.V. Vemkatappa's son Akshay.

In this fuction they felicitated Shr. P.B.Srinivas, Smt. P.Susheela, Smt. S.Janaki and our beloved Shri. S.P.B. To add to the events narrated by Covai Ravee, our man was in a pretty jovial mood from the start. Before the diginitaries were called to the dias, they were seated in the front row of the audience area, where our man was regaling SJ with some joke or the other, and as usual, she was continuously laughing, from time to time joined by PS.

To give a hint of his palyful mood;

while they were trooping one behind the other to the dias, PBS, PS,SJ,SPB one behind the other [in that order], our man put both hands on SJ's each shoulder and mimicked the way children run behind one-another like a train, moving from one side to another!

While PS was asked to speak, she apologised for not being able to speak kannada, and asked if Balu would translate what she spoke. Our man readily took the mic, but he was less in a mood to translate than to have fun. So, when she said, that there two kokhilam [Kuyil] on stage [referring to herself and SJ], our man immediately shot back saying, [roughly translated] 'I dont know who started this habit of calling females 'kokhila'... The word kohilam comes from Sanskrit and it connotes male gender. Kokhilam is never applied as a female gender... I dont know why, but you females have hijacked the word, and we males are left in lurch without having anything to call ourselves... . This is really unfair... [pointing to the crowd], let all the males unite against this.... No amma, you should accept that there are 4 kokhilam on stage...'. Needless to say everyone was in splits.

To take it to next level he said, pointing to PBS, 'he is a kokhilam, I always call Susheela amma 'white' kokhilam, isn't she a white kokhila....[ turning to SJ who was sitting right next to him, moving his hand over her head in playfull caressing way] this lady sitting next to me.... er.... is a 'white head' kokhila [referiing to her greying hair]'... The whole audi was enjoying and laughing their hearts out [including SJ, who knows our mans way only too well]....

Somehow the topic went to age when PBS had first spoken [calling himself 16 year old, because of a kannada song which starts 'I am a 16 year old boy', he had sung for Dr. Raj I believe], and PS who spoke next, also took it up as a theme and spoke how she had no white hair, so she was younger, etc :) . Then SJ came and said, 'Of all the people on stage I am the youngest'... Immediately our man, leaned sideways, with hands on his hip, and gave a mock offended expression!! ! to which SJ retorted saying 'Yeah... yeah... I know Balu, you are the youngest by way of age, but I was talking about experience'

All the other dignitaries and organisers praised how, though all of these singers mother tounge not being kannada have contributed so much with such great songs in Kannada. And as Ravee has mentioned, our man as he usually does, showered/ heaped all praises for Kannada fans.

Just tought would fill in our people on the non-core aspects of the function. Hope you liked reading this....

The Suriyan FM presenter Mr.Lakshmi Narayan and Mr.Ravi Varma have added life and soul to the program through wonderful editing and presentation. The base voice of Lakshmi Narayan seems to add beauty to the effect of the night. Congratulations. Eventhough, I have been one of those fortunate fans who had seen the 30 years celebration of our SPB's singing career and heard all 14 unsung songs of HIS, the way a mix of the two were presented by SURIYAN FM was simply astouding. We could feel the truth and sincerity in SPB's voice when he expressed his thanks to all HIS seniors and forerunners in the Industry, to all those who had paved the path for HIM and to the FANS One would have felt our hairs bristle on listening to Kalaignar Karunanidhi, S.Janaki & Vaali praising our GURUji. We would have rejoiced listening to the popular songs of other singers in our LEGEND's sweet, melliflous & expressive voice. And finally the way some of his other songs were interlaced into the program. It is superb. For eg. the "naan oru medai paadagan..." (i am a stage singer.....) seems to accurately present the views which he used to express at many occasions. It says "i have learnt very little and still have a lot to learn" "I go to wherever there is music".

"Who is GOD?".

The answer for this question differs from person to person. If you ask an atheist, he will mock at you, and may define the term as 'nature' by considering himself as Baron d'Holbach. On the other hand, just ask a person who believes in the existence of GOD, he will define the term with specific conceptions. And ask a scientist, especially a Physicist, he will adjust his spectacle, and will reply 'Light' by deriving some equations and the great Albert Einstein and his equations will assist him to confuse us. And, do not seek the definition from a philosopher, because you will end up with a state of bewilderment. Even the definition of 'GOD' is itself ambiguity; hence the question of his/her/its existence is again very ambiguous. But according to the old adage and conviction 'There will be a power above us which rules us', and the power again differs from person to person and his thoughts. And one must agree that the GOD is nothing but a superior soul, and an honesty heart which will help you to know thyself. For me, the power which makes me to know myself is nothing but the divine MUSIC.

I'm not an atheist, usually believes in my own GOD. It was 1997, when I was doing my Undergraduate, one of my close friends, was an atheist and he was always scolding the superstitious, and whenever he happened to see me in listening to some devotional songs which I used to, before going to any examination, then again he will start his scolding at my illogical belief. He was very normal student in studies, and he passed all his exams with average marks, still without arrears. There was an allied paper in our under-graduate, 'Electricity & Magnetisms'; he attempted that paper three times, but all in vain. Then, in the final semester, I requested my friend to listen an audio, which is about Guru Raghavendra, before going to prepare for that Physics paper. Again he annoyed with me and the same old story, the scolding. But somewhat I requested him to listen in that audio, then at least to respect my friendship, he agreed and started to listen in that audio everyday, before preparing for the exam and finished that paper with confidence. Finally, the result announced, believe me or not, he scored a mammoth eighty three (out of one hundred) in that paper which eluded him for the past three semesters.

Days, Months, years are running like anything.

I still remember our conversation after he got the result of his Physics paper. I wanted him to agree the existence of GOD or at least the existing power as Music, hence, I asked him 'So now you believe in GOD?' he nodded and replied me 'Not the GOD, but the Goddess POWER', as I smiled with smug, and asked 'You mean the MUSIC?', and 'YES' was the reply which I expected from his mouth, but he replied 'No'.

Now, I was perplexed and asked again 'IF NOT MUSIC, THEN??' He replied very calmly like a saint,

'THAT VOICE'

They revolutionised south Indian film music. She is a melody queen. And, his voice is magic. It was great music when mellisai mannargal M. S. Viswanathan, T.R. Ramamurthy, P. Susheela and S.P. Balasubhramanyam gathered for an unfor gettable bonanza in Coimbatore. Organised by Helpline Arts Academy that is into social service for six years, the funds raised from the evening will be used to conduct heart surgeries for disadvantaged children.

The programme, Sangeetha Saamrajyam, will remain etched forever in the memory of every music lover present there. It was not just about great music, but also an opportunity to draw inspiration as the legends shared anecdotes from their illustrious music careers. What shone through was their humility, mutual love and respect and of course, their passion for music.

Setting the mood

It was a delight to watch the paasaa sandai between the legendary M.S.V and singer SPB. The music director wanted his children (the singers) to be honoured first, but the singer insisted that their appa should take precedence.

Jillunnu oru isai mazhaiyil nanaiyya poareenga, the compere Uma Pamanabhan announced to a packed audience at Ramalinga Chettiar School grounds on Alagesan Road. And, that’s what happened with P. Susheela’s invocation song, Iraivan varuvaan avan enrum nimmadhi tharuvaan.

Apart from his mesmerising singing it is always a pleasure to watch SPB move about with the members of the orchestra, joking with them and helping them fine tune their instruments. When the audio became jarring, he went to the sound engineers, put on the ear phones and helped them set the audio system right, all along cheering for singer Ananthu as he sang the popular number vizhiye kadhai ezhudhu from the MGR starrer Urimai Kural with P. Susheela. Back on stage, he gave thumbs up to the team with a smile and settled down on his chair. Every member in the audience thanked him.

When it was his turn, SPB gave the orchestra the ‘one, two, three…’ cue, and cast his spell with unakkenna melae ninraai oh nandha laala. During a break the veteran M.S.V director had generous words for his colleagues. He said, “Singers like Balu, T.M. Soundarrajan and P. Susheela innovate the compositions so beautifully and bring popularity to music directors like me”.

M.S.V’s presence also energised the gathering. He stood there on stage all through the concert, playing his compositions on the harmonium and the keyboard and pepping up the singers and the orchestra. “If you clap well, we’ll get into the right mood,” he urged the audience.

Memorable was sindhu nadhiyin isai nilavinile…, Bharathiar’s poem set to music by M.S.V. Maalai pozhudhin mayakkathilae followed. “It is my brother Ilayaraaja’s favourite,” said MSV and went on to narrate many anecdotes of working with Kannadasan. And SPB followed that up with sippi irukkudhu muthum irukkudhu composition from K. Balachander’s film Varumaiyyin niram sigappu.

SPB’s innovation in ‘mayakkam thanthadhu yaar… MSVyo, kannadasano…’ was a treat. “They are mellisai mahachakravarthigal…Ilayaraaja and I used to wait in Luz corner everyday to get a glimpse of his white ambassador hoping we’d get a chance to work with him,” the singer recalled and told the audience that his sister S.P. Sailaja was also blessed to have performed with the legend.

Kanaa kaanum kangal mella from Agni Saakshi by SPB was beautiful. When Susheela sang her national award winning number, naalai indha velai parthu odi vaa nila, the music director turned nostalgic. “When Susheelamma came for the recording I told her she’d win the national award and she did,” said MSV. Susheela recalled “I got the award in ’69. Balu, Janaki, TMS and I were lucky to work with him. There is so much variety in every song,” she said and hummed partha nyabagam illaiyo.

Of melody and matter

“People feel bad that I haven’t won any awards, but earning your love and affection is the biggest award,” MSV told the audience. “Matter, meter and melody is important for a song, even if it’s a kuthu song,” he said and sang manidhan ninaipadhundu vazhvu nilaikkum endru from Avan dhaan manidhan. SPB sang the popular vaa nila nila admiring the bright moon and shouts of ‘once more’ rent the air. He sang ayiram nilavae vaa, vaa venilla and the extraordinary kamban aemaandhan.

When Kovai Murali sang adi ennadi raakkamma, MSV kept time clapping and the crowd joined in the fun. When asked if the new generation was missing out on good music, “No,” replied MSV. “At a concert in Pondicherry, an eight-year-old came up to us and asked for ninaipathellam nadanthu vittaal. That is 38-year-old! Irakkum manidhan, iravaa paadalgal (mortal men, immortal music).”

SPB's First Ever Song in Marathi

SPB recorded his first ever song in Marathi recently in Mumbai. This article was printed in today's newspaper (April 03, 2008) "Maharashtra Times". I am posting transalated version of it for all SPB fans.

"SPB TOUCHES WITH HIS SONGS AND PLEASANT DOWN-TO-EARTH SIMPLICITY"

“Sir, if I make any mistake, do not hesitate whatsoever, and rectify me till I get all the nuances in the right way. I have no issues”…. Music director Salil Kulkarni was blessed to hear these sweet and kind words from a Legendary singer which is very difficult to expect these days even from a new and upcoming singer. He is known as the “Voice” of South India, and he has left a credible dent in Hindi too with his sweet as honey voice. Yes, we are talking about the legendary singer Dr. S.P. Balasubramaniam who has just sung his first ever song in Marathi. What left a lasting impression on all those present on this occasion in addition to superb rendition of the song by SPB was the singers egoless (?), simplicity and the quest for perfection.

SPB flew from Chennai to Mumbai to sing this song for the marathi movie “Bandya aani baby”. The song was recorded in Suresh Wadekars “Aajivasan Studio”. SPB said earlier that “My long desire of singing in Marathi has been fulfilled with this song, I am happy about this. Salil played this song over phone. I agreed instantly listening to the rhythm. Salil also asked me about my scale (range of voice), and I really felt very good. Nowadays, nobody asks this. Many music directors insist that a singer must sing according to his scale (music directors system of definite tones).“ When asked if he listens to marathi songs, he replied “I listened them when many singers from Maharashtra come for programmes in Chennai, and also my friend Suresh Wadekar helps”.
Chats over and back to rehearsals. SPB first heart the complete song from Salil, and asked him the meaning of every word. After getting the proper pronunciations of every word, he got them recorded on his recorder. He then said “Give me half an hour time to prepare”, and then he started practicing. Exactly after half-an-hour, he came out for recording and asked Salil, “If I make a mistake, make me do it again.” He co-operated every moment, and to the core! Sometimes, it so happened that even though Salil okayed the take, SPB would say…“Sir, please at this particular word my vocals aren’t proper, so please get one take extra. Just in case…” He would also enquire “Is it ok if I express the emotion in this way?”

After the complete song was heard he embraced Salil saying, “this song really doesn’t seem to be belonging to this era…especially…with the lyrics and the semi-classical ragas… with my voice!! I request Salil not to make songs that are made in this generation. I am glad I waited to sing a song in Marathi for this long…because now it has genuinely hit the right node…and I am glad it took it off in the right scale…!”

Eventually… the recording was over…but that was a spectacular day that people present there in the studio witnessed………!!!
Truly it was a marvelous day with the magnificent maestro…unforgettable..!!!

When i used to hear this son, i feel like roaming in snow mountains and feel the cool breeze of the song... so melodious and also in middle, fast beat will come suddenly.. that is the highlight of this song...

This is a Details report SPB Concert in Auckland on 23rd Feb, 2008. Mr. Dominc Raja send to Mr. Vikas, Mumbai the Lovely Details report about Concert. Enjoy his feelings. I thank to Vikas send for immediatly for our members.

Could have requested you to request SPB to meet me for 2 minutes atleast at the concert. The concert was on Sat(23/Feb 08)in Auckland, terrible raining weather with storm. Auckland is not like India, tight security in the concert, I had to take back the photo camera to my car, not allowed inside, so no chance of a video recording. The organisers are mainly money minded, people from Hyderabad.
SPB is a real gem though but unfortunately he has to play along with authority.
SPB was conferred with 2 awards , one from Telugu association and other from Kannada koota of new Zealand.
SPB's big honour was that the Prime Minister was the chief guest at the concert.
SPB was majestic, dazzling, dynamic and full of energy and blast.
He enthralled the audience with some beautiful and spell bounding resonating with audience clapping, numbers from Telugu, Tamil, Hindi & Kannada films.
The other singers were, S.P.Sailaja, Mallikarjun & Gopika Poornima.
Mallikarjun was a good support to SPB and is a good dancer.

I am going to remember this for Ever, I was lucky indeed.
Down side is the chepest gallery ticket was NZ $50.00(Rs.1500), next is $100 na d the front seat were $250, which included dinner with the stars. I could not afford $250(house rent for a week over here is around $300). Nothing is fai r, it is a lot better these days to live and work in India. Compare the Rs.250 for the SPB meet.
I made up a audio CD of over 25 English songs from the best American singers and gave it to the organiser(Ravindra) to pass it over to SPB in the concert(interval). I do hope he likes my selection. No chance or way to ask him.

Annual Meet with SPB - 2007 on 17th Feb 2008

Dear SPB Fans,

Here comes one more fine opportunity for me to dwell at great lengths on an SPB event. Last month had its quota in the form of an SPB-Chitra Musical Concert at Chennai and this month we were due for a real treat at Coimbatore, the event being “The Annual Meet with our Legend”. Every one of you knew that preparations were in full swing for the event that graces us once a year. The organizing committee comprising of Ashok, Seshadhri, Covai Ravee, Venkat, Priyamvatha (alias Madhumitha) & the writer of this report under the able guidance of WebMaster Giridhar and support of Mr.Ramesh (a close friend of our SPB based at Coimbatore) embarked on a mission to see that the Annual Meet was made a Grand success. As all of you are aware that this event was organized by the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation. This entity had come into existence during the last annual meet at Bangalore when it was formally launched by our SPB and it had taken some time to get things organized in forming a Committee and assigning specific roles to each member. Roles having been made clear, each member fitted the bill and carried on the tasks, decided and assigned, which finally culminated into a spectacular event on the 17th of February 2008 at Hotel Grand Plaza, Coimbatore between 3:45pm and 6:45pm. A good response from enthusiastic fans kept us all in fine spirits and in great expectations of a fulfilling time that we were to enjoy

Well, let me now go into the details of the event. The Agenda of the Meet as it came out finally is as below

3) Photo Session with SPB coupled with presentation of memento to each participant
4) Video Show of Charity Institutions to which donations were made in the past
5) Video Show of Celebrity Musicians speaking about our Legend

8) Introduction of the Foundation Committee Members
9) Question & Answers Session
10) Memento to SPB
11) Memento to Press Reporters
12) Vote of Thanks by WebMaster Giridhar

As you would notice, two out of the above agenda are focused on Charity. The very purpose of the Foundation is this – to focus on doing something good to the society we live in through the inspirations & learnings we had imbibed from the relationship with the Legend.

As a fitting start to the Event, some of the key members namely Covai Ravee & Venkat took our SPB to the Coimbatore Seva Nilayam, an orphanage for children which was located at 15 minutes drive from the venue of the Meet. Our SPB spent some time there discussing with the Head of the orphanage, an aged veteran lady at 93 years of age and also spending some moments with the children cracking jokes and bringing lovely smiles to their faces and in the process getting photographed with them.

Elsewhere at the venue, Everyone of us were on our toes awaiting eagerly the arrival of our beloved Guruji from the Orphanage as the clock ticked past 3:30pm, the scheduled start time. Finally at 3:45, our SPB entered the venue greeting one and all at the entrance and then moving into the Hall to a standing ovation, finally to take his seat at the far end. One could sense the air filled with unexpressable happiness and joy and thrill at the sight of HIM.

Immediately, Ashok moved to take over the stage and started singing a prayer song with the entire audience standing up.

Once this was over, our WebMaster Giridhar Raja went on to make the Welcome Address. He started off by welcoming our SPB and mentioned that HE had come to the event inspite of his

severe ill-health for the last one week and that showed his attachment to the fans. HE also went further in elaborating the objective of the Meet saying that the prime purpose was to publicise the activities of the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation and gain wider reach among the people so that its goals of serving the society could be realized fully in the near future. He then listed out the activities being conducted by the Foundation namely the charities to social institutions like Orphanages, Old Age Homes and Schools for Special Children, the Blood Donation Camps and the Annual Meets for the Fans to meet with SPB to interact with him and receive his blessings.

This was followed by a Photo session with the Legend. This was planned well, in the sense, that the format was a group of 3 to 4 persons taking photos as a group so that it would save valuable time which could be spent better on interactions with the Great Human Being. Our Guruji
exhibited the humourous side of his personality when he joked at many instances during the photography session. One could find him saying “Here is the man who is fit enough to be my friend”. This was when Ramesh (his close friend based at Coimbatore) and his family came on to the stage to get photographed. The crux was Ramesh resembled our Guruji very much in physical size. This created a ripple of laughter in the audience. The next was when he played around refusing to handover the memento (a multi-purpose handbag with SPB Fans Charitable Foundation printed on it) to one of the children and taking a while to give it. The other one was when a tonsured headed man (my friend who had accompanied me to the Meet) came on for the photo-session he remarked “straight from thirupathi eh!!”. There were many such lovely moments and all this considering his poor health was something extra-ordinary which expressed his love for us fans. The Committee Members of the Foundation also had the privilege of taking a special photograph with HIM.

Pleasantaries having been completed, next was time for some serious business. A video presentation of one Orphanage and one School for Special Children were shown. The orphanage was “Samarpana” and it had the heads of the institution speaking on their activities and the help that the SPB Fans Group had rendered by donating utilities to them in the year 2006. They thanked the Fans for their contributions. Next, we had Dr.Ambika of RASA (A school for Special Children at Abhiramapuram, Chennai) talking about the use of theratrics and Music in dealing with specially challenged children. She went on to say that she had done extensive research on the use of theatrics and music in improving the abilities of the Special Children and it was quite fitting that the SPB Fans Charitable Foundation which is associated with the Music Legend SPB should be helping them in their service to the Society. She thanked the Foundation for its contributions.

Next followed the Video Presentation of the Interviews with Chitra-ji, Tablist Prasad & Shri.Balamurali Krishna.

Chitra-ji appeared quite thrilled speaking about the LEGEND. She had a lot to tell about her happy times with HIM. She said that he was always a very jolly person and whatever tension or seriousness in the atmosphere would be dispelled by him through his enterprising presence. HE ensured that everyone had a good time recording the songs. She also admired the importance HE gave to friendship, Normally one tends to forget old friends on reaching a high stature in life but it was not so with HIM. He always had his old set of friends with him and at every place he visited, he had friends and maintained the relationship over time. This she said was very rare in popular personalities and she envied him for that. She went on to narrate her first meeting with our SPB. It was for first Duet with him for the Tamil Film “Punnagai Mannan”, the song being “kaala kaalamaaga vaazhum kaadhalukku…”.Till then, she had not met him and she arrived at the recording studio a bit late. It seems our SPB was already there, ready with his part of the song and she felt embarrassed that she had been late. She also said that it was SPB who had taught her Telugu and also the methods to beautify a song with delicate touches. One funny incident which she narrated bought out the childish & naughty side of our Guruji. She had gone for a recording of a Telugu song with our SPB. At that time, she had not learnt Telugu. To help her , our Guruji had written down her portion of the lyrics for her and had explained her how to sing it. When the recording started and they started singing, she found that the entire recording team was having a hearty laugh at her part of the rendition. She said she was quite confused at that and she also found SPB turning his face away and also having hearty laugh. This she said, prompted her to look at the lyrics to check if she had sung something wrong. She had found that it was OK and was not sure what was wrong with her singing. Then our SPB excused himself to the entire team. Later she understood that SPB had written words like idiot, fool and so on in her lyrics and she in turn had been singing it seriously thinking it was the original lyrics and that SPB was trying to help her out. Then she had understood the reason for their laughter. She said that she was quite surprised because he had inserted words to match the tune perfectly and one would never have any doubts at all - what a naughty man, our LEGEND. She then went on to tell that at first she was hesitant to agree for the interview as her understanding of a Fans Association was that they would fight whenever some one passed a bad comment on their idol .She said she was relieved to learn that the SPB Fans Foundation was into doing good activities for the society. She ended her part by praying to GOD to give our Guruji lots and lots of good health to continue singing many more good songs in the future also.

Next was Tablist Prasad who had been associated with him right from the early 70s. He said it was always great fun being in a recording with our Legend for they had good times trying to excel each and acknowledged each other very well. One would remember that Shri Prasad was one of the judges in Ennodu Paattu Paadungal program aired on Jaya TV. He went on to list some of the SPB songs for which he had played tabla.

Next was the GREAT and renowned Carnatic singer Shri Bala Murali Krishna. He really touched our hearts when he said that SPB was his KUZHANDHAI (CHILD). He further touched us when he said that their relationship was that of a FATHER & CHILD and he maintained this throughout his talk. He blessed our Guruji abundantly and went on to say that there was nothing that our Guruji could not do. Be it any type of song, he could render it with ease and accomplishment, he said. Be it a romantic song, a pathos song or a boisterous song or one that required Carnatic touches, it was only possible by HIM. He said this was not possible for others. Even though he said it was not right for a FATHER to praise his CHILD, he could not control himself from doing so. HE said that his CHILD’s good health was his own health. He said his CHILD’s accomplishments were his accomplishments. He wanted his CHILD to cut down on his assignments and maintain good health for he was overworking which is not good for one’s health. Right through his speech, he maintained this trend and one got a feeling that this was a real & unique FATHER-CHILD pair. One could also observe that our SPB was really humbled by his FATHER’s words and blessings. He was constantly holding up his hands to the Maestro on the Screen whenever he said the touching words. Once could feel that he must have been happy to hear soothing words from a person he respected so much. Shri Bala Murali Krishna’s words were indeed unique and we should thank Ashok, Seshadri & Madhu for having taken the initiative to get his appointment and record the interview with him for all of us and for our GURUJI who will indeed cherish each word that was said.

A short commercial break was announced by the WebMaster Mr.Giridhar for Tea / Coffee and everyone accompanied the LEGEND to the hall where it was served and they had a jolly time clicking of the cameras and storing his image on mobiles & cameras

When the program resumed, it was time for our LEGEND to handover the samples of utilities like trunk cases, emergency lamps etc…. as a token presentation to the small team from the

Coimbatore Seva Nilayam. All the articles had been pre-delivered to the Seva Nilayam one day in advance by Covai Ravee & Seshadhri and our GURUJI had a look at it during his visit there before the start of the Meet (as detailed before in this write-up).

Next followed the introduction of the Foundation Committee Members - Seshadri, Ashok, Madhumitha & Dasaradhi (the writer of this write-up) to SPB and the gathering. The members received the memento from the LEGEND and in the process were also photographed with him.

To give you a brief about the roles of the Committee Members – Seshadri’s role is event management (concerts, Annual meets....), Ashok’s role is accounts management and coordination, Madhumitha’s role is to maintain & increase membership database and Dasaradhi’s role is Website Maintenance / communication to the Groups / Printing stationeries

What came next was the much awaited Question & Answers session for this was the one which involved the active participation of the Legend and the Fans. I will list some of the unique questions and answers that I am able to recollect (for each question he explained in very great lengths but I am not able to capture everything here as I was just enjoying the feeling being there with him and could not recollect detail by detail – pls excuse me for that – maybe other fans can elaborate on this after reading this article)

FAN QUESTION 1 : Do you think that the present relationship between YOU and the Fans Group has a link to the previous Birth ?
SPB ANSWER 1 : Yes, I think so. Otherwise, how can one explain this phenomenon of so many persons showering their affection and love on me or fans coming over from distant parts of the country - Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore ....... This could not have happened without some carry over from the previous birth. Maybe in the previous birth, we ALL were a part of a big dynasty with a king and maybe I was one of the subjects. This birth, maybe, it has been reversed and I am at the helm with you ALL loving and showing affection.

FAN QUESTION 2: Do you think only singing is your life ?
SPB ANSWER 2 : No, I would not say that. Of course singing forms a major part of my life, no doubt, but that is not all. There are other things in my life like my family, friends etc… who form the other part of my life. Of course singing has given me my income, fame and popularity. Imagine, if I was not a singer, I would have a listless entity. Imagine that I was an office going guy and walking on a road. What would people say. "there goes the DHADIYAN (Fat Man)…” (everyone has a hearty laugh). But being a singer, it is something different. People respect me and have a high regard for me. In fact, my first aim in life was to become an engineer. That is what my father wanted me to be and he had strived all through his life to see that I am one. But the director above (GOD) had written a different screen play for me and here I am, in front of you experiencing all you love and affection

Q3 : When will you perform a carnatic concert ?
A3 : Well, I am not able to understand it. Earlier, due to heavy commitment for recording songs, I could not find time to fit in anything. I thought that after my recording schedules became lighter, I would be able to do something, but somehow, I seem to be filled up with some activity or the other and I am not able to find time

Q4 : You seem to have an excellent control on your Sanskrit diction. How did you acquire it ?
A4 : My father was a Harikatha exponent and I was exposed to lot of Sanskrit phrases even as a child and over the years I have learnt it in addition to Hindi as well. So, whenever lyrics in Sanskrit is given to me, I first understand it fully either by myself or by consulting experts in Sanskrit. This way I ensure that the intention of the lyrics is not diluted. I am not worried if some people are angry with me for saying this – all languages of the world, be it, Persian, Greek or Latin or for that matter any Indian Language as well, had their roots in Sanskrit. You will find that down South, in Tamil, people pronounce the word Sanskrit “SHIVA” as“SIVA” and like that many words are there. Even in one of the Tamil devotional songs on Lord Shiva, you will find that while the chorus sings as “nama sivaya”, I sing it as “nama shivayaa”. One has to understand the roots and handle it accordingly otherwise the originality and the essence is lost. I also find some people distorting Sanskrit phrases. Like “EndharO mahanubhaavulu”. Some sing this as “Endha rO Mahanu Bhaavulu” splitting the words which gives a totally different meaning allotgether

Q5 : You yourself being a Music Director, how do you think the MDs like M.S.Viswanathan, IlayaRaja etc have created a unique identity for themselves
A5 : Well, I will not able to clearly pin point it. But it is the way in which each one handles a raaga. The same raaga are handled differently by different music directors by way of orchestration. (He now sings a few lines of a Rafi’s Hindi number and immediately someone from the gathering shouts “Naushad Ali”). See you are able to identify a Naushad Ali’s composition. Everything is in the orchestration. One would have handled a raaga differently and that would have become popular whereas another music director would have handled it differently and it would not have been popular. Come on now, you all tell me, are you able to identify any of the present day music directors from their songs. It becomes impossible because nowadays everything is a cocktail of something already available. All the sounds are available in the computer and one just jumbles it up differently and makes music leading to lack of identity. There is even pressure from producers and directors to just copy other songs already made. Such is the scene now.

Q6 : You are such a good person, how is that possible (I am not clear if this was the actual question asked but it was something like this)
A6 : (the fan who asked this question stands up and our SPB asks him). How do you say I am a good person. You are just seeing me on the Screens and in this type of meetings only. You do not know anything else about my other activities. Well, to some extent, I agree. Only if someone is good at heart, can he deliver something good as well (this comment earns a round of applause from the fans)

Q7 : What do you think about this SPB Fans Charitable Foundation ?
A7 : I am indeed happy about its activities from whatever, I have seen and heard. But I often wonder why my name is used when the good things are being done by the fans and why should I be a part of all the credits. What have I done to earn all these. I just sing the songs for my income and for my family, that’s all. But my name is used. Since my name has been used for the Foundation, I thought it is not right on my part to be silent and end up someone asking me what is that I have done for this Foundation. That is why I am also contributing something every month to the Foundation (for your information, our Guruji is contributing Rs.10,000 every month to the Foundation Account) and now no one can question me on this. To this, one of the fans Ramesh (SPB’s close friend) stands up to answer “Sir, when we are in trouble or worry and on coming back home, when we listen to your songs we are transported to a different world. Sometimes I cry on listening to your songs (my wife will vouch for that). You have become a part and parcel of our life and so the credit is due to you”. Next another fan Vijayakrishnan stands up “Sir, it was due to your songs that we all fans have come united to perform this noble task. As individuals we would have only contributed say Rs.500 or so and would have stopped with that whereas as part of the Team we have now come together to achieve bigger things which is solely due to your influence on us and hence it is only right that the Foundation has your name also embedded in it”. (One could see that our SPB accepted this argument very well and applauded by clapping his hands - and from now onwards, he will never have any doubts as to the use of his name for the Foudation).

Q8 : Why are you not singing much songs these days. Is it by design or otherwise ?
A8 : I think it is high time that I stop being too humble. I have come to a stage where I can now express the reality. Well, those days in the 70s and 80s, songs would wait for me to be recorded and music directors waited for me even for months. Having ruled for nearly 25 years, it is only right that the scenario changes. For the past ten years I have been recording less number of songs because the trend has been to use many different singers and it is also good that others get the opportunity also. Moreover, going by the quality of songs that is being composed today, I do not regret for the lesser number of songs. Even one of the fans Vikas Kamble from Mumbai had asked me once why I was not singing in Hindi these days. The frank reply to that would be that I am not being called anymore. At one point many years back, there was a vaccum in the Hindi Industry after the demise of Rafi-saab and fading of Kishore-ji, when the music directors there thought that I could fill up the vaacum left by these Legends and hence for 10 to 15 years I was recording lot of Hindi songs. But in the last decade or so, new singers who are quite good have emerged in the Hindi scene and it is only natural that they are given the first preference over me. But if I am called any day I would only be happy to render songs in Hindi. But in spite of all these, I am happy that I still record at least one song per day whatever be the language

Q9 : On a given day, how do you manage your singing when your actual state of emotions is one and the song you are to render requires a totally different state of emotion ?
A9 : Well, I do not know how I do it. It's a gift from God. But finally I think, as professionals that is what is expected of us. It is something like leaving your chappals outside the temple when you are entering it. Likewise, when I enter a recording theatre, I leave my natural emotions outside and I go in without it and adapt myself to the emotions that are required for the song. Imagine the other way around. If on a given day, I have rendered a pathos song and I go home in the evening, I cannot ask my wife to serve me good in a sad tone (he acts out the scene with a change in voice modulation – what a great modulator HE is). It would sound funny and inappropriate. Of course, on some days, you feel totally out, in which case, it is better to cancel the recording and have it on another day. But that rarely happens with me. But, I understand that Hindi singers like Mukesh used to delay their recording if they were not in a mood on a given day.

Q10 : (not able to remember the question)
A10 : Well, the difference between other singers and me, I think it is high time that I was more frank with it. While the other singers sing a song as a song, I act according to the required emotion when I sing a song. That helped in livening up the songs.

(Well, I feel exhausted now trying to think of all the other questions. I stop now on this – but I am sure that I have covered the most interesting and critical part of the session)

The Question & Answer session was followed by the presentation of a Memento to our Guruji by the Committee Members on behalf of the Fans. The memento was a tall Sandal wood article and resembled the Ashoka Pillar with several lion heads at the top. Our Guruji seemed to be impressed with it and expressed that it symbolized unity. One of the Members Venkat had made ready a Jumbo Greeting Card with some inscriptions on it. One could see our Guruji reading it attentively.

The Press Reporters from the dailies Dinamalar, Dinakaran etc….. were also honoured with presentation of memento by the Legend.

Finally, the WebMaster Giridhar came out with the Vote of Thanks. He said that even though he was not well, the Legend has taken upon himself to see that he was there at the event without

disappointing the fans and participating in the meet enthusiastically. The WebMaster called this a family Meet rather than otherwise. He thanked all the Committee Members, the Press Reporters, Covai Ravee and Ramesh for their contributions in making this event a grand success.
It was quite appropriate that he mentioned all of us a family. Let us all maintain the spirits of a family and take the Foundation to greater heights. My humble request to you at this juncture would be to form a group of fans in your city/town of residence and enroll as many members into the Foundation so that we can do many more contributions to the society that we live in. Royan of Bangalore has already set the wheel rolling in Bangalore and those in Andhra, Kerala and other parts of Hindi should also take lead and expand the Web of the Foundation.

In fact, I am happy to inform you ALL that the response of the Fans after the Meet was encouraging and some of the Fans came forward in registering themselves as Members of the Foundation and many others took the Registration Forms for enrollment later. There were also cash contributions from many fans at the Meet. This is in addition to some fans who had already sent in their contributions to the Foundation Account before the Meet. We thank all those fans who had contributed.

I end now with the information that our SPB announced that the next Annual Meet should be in Hyderabad. So, Hyderabad Fans, please gear up for the event from now onwards and form a group to plan for the event and keep us posted.

For your info, DVDs of the Annual Meets 2004, 2005 & 2006 was put up for sale at the Meet and there were good number of Fans who had purchased it by paying Rs.450. The proceeds of this sale would go to the Foundation Account. Dear FRIENDS,

Everyone of us would be in an excited state thinking about the forthcoming Annual Meet which opens to us a door to the heart of our beloved SPB once again.

Hope many of you would have registered yourselves with Ashok & Seshadri for attending the Meet. This is a golden chance. One cannot afford to miss it for whatever reason. So, set aside a day (after all it is a SUNDAY, the 17th February 2008) to meet your idol. We should turn up in good numbers to honour our SPB's time. So, hurry up and register.

Many of you planning to attend would have got yourselves curious as to the Agenda of the Meet. It took us some time to finalise and finally we have almost brought it to shape for presenting to you ALL.

The Agenda is contained in the EXCEL file attached herewith. It is quite detailed and lists all that we have planned for the Meet.

There are some unique additions this year compared to the previous years. Some of them are

1) SPB Time - wherein he will perform whatever he feels like for the time slot planned
2) Autograph on Photograph - the photograph you take during the meet will be autographed by our SPB then & there at the Meet
3) A brief video presentation of the charitable acts that we, as Fans of the Legend, have done in the past few years - the credit for which goes to the LEGEND for he has motivated us thorugh his music and personality
4) Donating to an Orphanage

Of course the above is in addition to the usual question & answers session and other activities with SPB.

In order to make all this happen, the Participation Fee has been fixed as Rs.250 per Participant (does not cover the donation expenses). This will go towards the charges that will be incurred for the HALL, High Tea, Memento for SPB, Photograph (with autograph), Memento for the Participants, Advertisement & Publicity costs etc. This amount can be paid at the venue.

The Coimbatore Seva Nilayam is being run for Orphans and children of very low income families. The
orphanage was set up by a truly remarkable lady, Mrs.T.V.Thillaiamma l in the year 1950, nearly 60 years ago and now at the age of 93, she is still actively involved in the orphanage activities. They have given us a list of utilities and other items they are badly in need of and our intention is to procure these and handover to their represenative during the Annual Meet though our SPB. Emi Ee Vintha Moham - Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna (telugu)

Today's post is a debut songs of our guruji in telugu.

"Emi Ee Vintha Moham" was from the film Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna composed by S.P.Kondandapani. He sang the song alongwith P.B.Srinivas, Eelapati Raghuramayya and P.Suseela.

I am not aware of this songs is posted on this blog earlier or not.

This song was recorded on 15th Dec 1966 which is Guruji,s birthday as a Singer in the Film industry. & Movie was released in 1967. Guruji sang 2 songs for this movie.

SPB on his debut film:

S P Balasubramanyam

This is my debut film. It happened because of Sree Kodandapani gaaru. He was one of the judges when I contested in a singing competition in 1963 in Madras. After the program, he came to me and said that I'd become a popular singer and will keep on singing for the next forty years! And, true to his blessings, I find myself still singing, even after forty years! He took me to S. Bhavanarayana gaaru, introduced me, and recommended me but nothing happened on that front. I was disappointed and went back to college to complete my second year AMIE.

Again, Kodandapani gaaru called me one day and took me to Padmanabham and asked me
to sing a song. I sang the title song of mErE mehboob, pibarE raamarasam, etc. to
Padmanabham, who liked my voice and assured that he'd definitely give me a chance. A
part of the song Emi yee vinta mOham! was intially supposed to be sung by Ghantasala
maasTaaru. He went to his native place to attend to his mother who fell ill and was thus
unable to come to the recording. As the shooting neared, they made me sing it on an ad
hoc basis, with an intention to replace it with Ghantasala maasTaaru's voice if it was not
as good. Though I had only one charaNam to sing, I practised the whole song. On the day
of recording, December 15, 1966, no car came to pick me up.
I waited for sometime and went the studio on my bicycle. Until I went to Vijaya Gardens, I
had a feeling that they might not have liked my voice, but when I reached I was informed
that the car had a mechanical problem. After waiting for some time, I got a call from
Kodandapani gaaru and I recorded the whole song in twenty minutes. I was paid Rs. 300/-
as the remuneration for this song. I mailed Rs. 100/- to my father. At that time, I used to
get Rs. 80/- per month from my home to meet my expenses in Madras as I was staying in
a room along with other friends for my studies.
While sending the money, I also wrote to my father that he need not send me money for
another two months. My first song along with bigwigs like P.B. Sreenivos, Raghuramayya
gaaru, and P. Susheela was a memorable experience. When Ghantasala maasTaaru
returned from the village they showed the song to him. He said that my voice was good
and insisted that the voice should be kept as is in the song. It was his blessings and S.P.
Kondandapani gaari blessings, which I cannot forget even after forty years...

Padmanabham speaks:

Padmanabham
Veeturi and I are very good friends. He was the permanent writer for our drama troupe
'Rekha and Murali Arts' (Rekha is Vallam Narasimha Rao's daughter and Murali is
Padmanabham's son who acted in Pelli Kaani Thandri, a remake of the Hindi flick Kuvaaraa
Baap). Though I was busy with films, I used to allocate ten days each month for dramas.
My brother Purushottham, music director S.P. Kodandapani, Director K. Hemambharadhara
Rao, Actors Perumallu, Dandu Venkataraju from Keshavaram were my partners in this
troupe. Veeturi gave me a story for a drama but the herione had a double role and we
thought it'd not suit a drama and put it aside. But then, Kodandapani pursuaded me to do
it as a film, and I approached NTR for the film.
He agreed to do it immediately and that movie was eventually a big hit; yes, it's Devatha
with Savithri in dual role. Then we did another film Potti Pleader-u based on Bhamidipati
Radhakrishna's play "idEmiTi?" (Sobhan Babu's first dual role film) which was also a big
hit. After getting success in two films, we started out third film Sree Sree Sree Maryaada
Ramanna. As I had a comedian image, we chose the film with a theme that has scope for
comedy as well as a message-oriented concept.
In both the previous films, several actors acted in guest roles, which was a good plus for
these films. So we decided to do it the same way in this film too and we requested
Krishna, Sobhan Babu, and Harinath to do a song in the film with Rajasree. We planned to
get the song sung by Raghuramayya gaaru, P.B. Sreenivos, and Ghantasala maasTaaru,
but maasTaaru was busy at the time of recording. It was then that S.P. Kondandapani
gaaru showed me SPB and introduced him as a good singer.
So we thought to go ahead and record the song with him instead of Ghantasala gaaru.
Today, I feel very proud to say that he was from our banner! The film became a landmark
due in Telugu films to Balu's debut. The film was a huge success in itself, and we wanted
to dub it into tamil too but it didn't work out due to some reasons. Out of my 400 movies,
this film gave me utmost satisfaction, I should say.
The film's indoor shoot was done entirely at Golden Studio and Prasad Studios. For
outdoor, Padamu village in Chittor district was our location. The tiger fight scene was also
shot at Golden Studio. We used a real tiger and got its jaws stitched together for safety,
but it was still too risky. S.P. Kodandapani appeared in a small role in the film also, as a
person who brings to the King's court a complaint about a cat. (This is his second screen
appearance, after appearing as a music conductor in the film Potti Pleader-u). The
producer, and Padmanabham's brother, Purushottham shares the scene with Kodandapani.

Story:
A shepherd boy Rami (Padmanabham) becomes Rammanna with the blessings of a sage.
The Minister and the Army Commander of the kingdom torture the people for more money
on the taxes. Ramanna informs this to the King, and the King offers him to take the
throne for three months and solve the problems. Ramanna takes the challenge and
succeeds in that and also wins the heart of the princess in this process.

About the film:
The film is more famous as the greatly well-versed, popular Guinness record-holder
playback singer Padmasri S.P. Balasubrahmanyam debuted with the film as a singer.

“Paadavaa Un Paadalai” – Special Tribute to MAESTRO IlayaRaja
A Musical Concert featuring the Playback Singing Legends “SPB” and “Chitra”

Dear Friends,

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY, PROSPEROUS & JOYFUL NEW YEAR ENCOMPASSING A HAPPY PONGAL (Sambar, Vada…….?????) TOO (the sambar, vada had its significance in the sense that this is how our SPB wished the Fans – “Happy Pongal, sambar, vada….” when they went on stage to present bouquets to HIM & Chitra-ji during the concert)

It was a great beginning this year what with a musical concert featuring our LEGEND at the very start of the year and the Annual Meet scheduled for February. Let us ALL pray to God for an SPB events galore this year too.

Now let me come to the first SPB event of the year for us

It was a much awaited concert with Chitra-ji to combine with our LEGEND. What more do we need. And that too featuring only Maestro’s Ilayaraja songs. What more can we ask for.

To put in a nutshell, the concert was simply fabulous. Our SPB was at his joyful and enthusiastic best and Chitra-ji had no other option than getting infected by his presence and that showed up in the way she sang the duets with him making lot of SPB-like improvisations in singing, much to our SPB’s surprise.

It was a royal treat to the fortunate fans based in Chennai for it had a lot of never-heard songs (on stage by SPB). SPB was indeed very right when he praised Suresh, the leader of Shruthilaya Orchestra for his song selections and lauded him abundantly. Fans who could not make it to the concert, please do not worry, SS Music has recorded the show and it will be telecast shortly (this was announced by our SPB during the later part of the show). So, be on the lookout – do not miss it.

For a change, let me start off this time with a list of songs upfront so that you all have an immediate feel of the quality of the content.

This time around I do not want to bore you all with my usual format of detailing in sequence song by song. So, for a change, I will be detailing the concert under various heads.

LEGENDS are LEGENDS, that is why they are LEGENDS (??????)
Be it SPB or Chitra, one could observe them touching upon the ground when entering the stage. Both of them bowed before the crowd. Chitra-ji touched upon SPB’s feet and got his blessings. Both of them were humility personified, more so Chitra-ji humble in stature & throwing frequent glances of appreciation and admiration at our SPB during the entire concert and ever-pleasant with a permanently embedded smile on her face.

SPB on the MAESTRO
He made a mention that the show was totally dedicated to IlayaRaja. HE expressed his gratitude to HIM for having given him the opportunity to sing most of his compositions and also on behalf of Chitra-ji. HE prayed to GOD to bestow his buddy with good health so that he could continue his musical journey forever. HE also came out with the information that IlayaRaja his friend would be conducting lot of live shows across the world this year and that there was no doubt whatsoever that he would be a part of it.

He made a special mention of Ilayaraja’s orchestration when he sang the song “Konji Konji alaigal….”. He said this was one of the compositions he liked best eventhough his other compositions were great as well. He also remembered Govardhanan Master who had played the harmonium for this song and said that he was with the Maestro for 30 years and still the Maestro has retained the same harmonium with him till date.

SPB Solos
He rocked and rocked all through. He was at his best in spite of some sodhappals (goof-ups) here & there. He compensated with lot of improvisations in the songs. The song Rambambam…. had him rocking like hell (sorry should it be heaven??? I thought they don’t rock there). He was at his jolly best. Songs like Kootathile koyil pura, raga dheepam etrum neram….. had him powering the songs with great & limitless energy (God where does he get it at this physical age) to add weight to it. He turned melancholic when singing songs like nalam vaazha ennaalum and keladi kanmani paadagan sangadhi and one could feel the threads of subtle emotions weaved into the song. The lover’s feel could be felt in his “nee thane endhan pon vasantham…” and “konji konji alaigal oada”. These all led one to wonder whether he had aged at all. As I said earlier in one of my write-ups he is 61 in age and 16 at heart and spirit. Let us ALL pray to God to give him good health to carry on forever. One could find him enjoying the show to the full and there were no signs of frustration or temper or dissatisfaction. He appeared to be a fully satisfied man on the day. Nothing upset him on this day.

He had only one request at the start of the concert. “Do not come backstage during the concert time. You can be with us and get our autographs after the show. The reason – we will be focusing on the songs that we will be singing and we do not want to be disturbed”. Despite this, one could find people swarming at the entrance to the backstage for his darshan. Passion at its height. Only HE can attract.

His power of observation and presence of mind came to the fore in another incident when on hearing a child crying among the audience he said “Elders, please do not eat be selfish & devour the biscuits yourselves, please give it to the children too so that they do not cry”. This showed that he is always with the masses.

At the start of the program, he told that every time he sang he considered it as a first attempt. This had butterflies filling his stomach and he jovially attributed this to be the cause of his size.

SPB on CHITRA-ji
At the start of the concert, our SPB mentioned that Chitra was a much disciplined artiste and humility personified. He talked a lot about her talent and his expressed pride in singing with such a great singer when the senior partners like Susheelaamma & Janakiamma had faded away from film singing.

He also made a mention that she had won more national awards than him and Das-anna (Yesudas). She corrected him saying it was equal to them.

At one point of time when Chitra-ji was hurrying to the stage to join him, he cautioned her saying that fat people like them should not hurry as it would make them breathless. Earlier to this, he also jovially mentioned that she was competing with him in all aspects including being like him.

When Chitra sang Janakiamma’s Thoongadha vizhigal rendu… he appreciated her humility in singing the songs of other singers as well.

SPB - Chitra duets
All the duets were great compositions of the Maestro and one had to just sit back and relish the beauty of it through the golden voices of the two LEGENDS.

Our SPB was so jovial and cute during the duets that Chitra-ji could not hold herself and she too participated in improvisations. This was prominent in the song “Guruvaayurappa……” when towards the end of the song she did it and our SPB’s presence of mind was so good that when he followed it up with the words “unai yaar thadukka……” meaning “who can stop you doing that” (in this context it was her SPB-like improvisation), he gestured at her and it was self-explanatory.

The song Rambambam…. had him rocking like hell (sorry should it be heaven??? I thought they don’t rock there). He was at his jolly best and Chitra-ji borrowed energy from him to compete with him in presenting a great treat to the ears. Our SPB on his part introduced lot of improvisations in this song and one had to listen to it to understand the extent of improvisations. The only limitation was that he could not afford to dance for such a number. Otherwise he was into it totally compensating with an energetic delivery and with a light sway of his body. After this song, he expressed that he was not able to remember the songs fully and hence he was making mistakes at some places. He hoped this would be treated as rehearsals and he would better it the next time. Too humble. He also said that at younger ages he used to feel proud of his excellent memory to remember the minute details of various compositions.

When they sang the songs “Adi vaanmathi…..” & “Poongaatru un per solla….”, SPB prompted Chira-ji to join him in singing a Hindi bit and then sailed into the songs. Was he trying to hint that the tunes for these numbers were borrowed by the Maestro from those Hindi numbers???

For their first duet of the show “kaalai kavidhaigal ……..”, 4 new female singers joined them for the chorus and one could find that they were from the Ennodu Paattu Paadungal group. He ensured that they all introduced themselves to the audience before going ahead with the song.

SPB mentioned that the song “kaala kaalamaaga vaazhum….” was their first song together.

He sang a small bit of the song “O papa laali…..” from Geethanjali (the telugu original of Idhayathai Thirudaathe) without background music in order to fill up a small break when Chitra-ji took some time off to refresh herself with water. The sweetness of his voice and the melody in it could be savoured in that solo rendering

CHITRA-ji Solos
She rendered all her solo songs as it was on the records and it was perfection through out. Whether it was “Ninnukkori varanum or Aathadi ammadi or Vaan megam or Kuzhal oodhum….” she was up to it and brought out the tempo through her voice. In “Ededho ennam valarthen…” she expressed the emtions very well. Her “Paadariyen padippariyen….” certified her trained music background (Ninnukkori also had some of it). All her songs received great applause from the audience.

SPB on Shruthilaya
If one had observed during the Ennodu Paattu paadungal program on Jaya TV, one would understand the rapport that the Orchestra had developed with our SPB. During those episodes one could find him constantly encouraging and admiring the expertise of some of the key players in the troupe. This once again came to the fore during the concert.

HE adundantly praised Suresh stating that he was one of the finest tabla player and that he was also selfish to play only for the top numbers during the concert. He was also in total awe of Vijay, the Keyboard player and Viji, the percussionist when they played the music as it was in the record for the song “kaala kaalamaaga vaazhum kaathalukku…….” quite admirably.

He made a special mention of Vijay whom he said could play any instrument on the Keyboard. In fact, there were no live violins used in the concert and Vijay made it up all on his keyboard. This was also for all other songs as well and one could find that he had the total attention of our SPB towards him. Our LEGEND indeed seemed to have a special corner for him in his heart. The flute was also quite good in those songs where it was prominent. The only setback seemed to be the inadequate use of dolak, the sound of which did not sound right. Otherwise, the Orchestra provided excellent support to the Golden Voices of the LEGENDS.

Our SPB also commended Suresh for the good selection of the songs and he did mention that he had not sung some of the songs on stage for quite some time.

SPB on the WEB fans
Immediately after the song “Jingala Jingala….”, some of fans from our Group went on stage to present bouquettes to the two GREAT masters of singing. When the organisor announced that the SPB fans would be felicitating, our SPB corrected it as WEB fans and he spent sometime as ever to brief about our Group and the philanthropic activities that we are engaged in. HE blessed us all and he also mentioned that the WebMaster was Mr.Giridhar Raja

SPB on the Organisors & Support Team & Concluding Speech
Finally before his final number “keladi kanmani paadagan sangadhi…..” for the day, he thanked the organisors Mr.Ramana of Ramana Sharan Incorporation, the man behind the show, Suresh, the co-organisor and Orchestra Leader, the Sound System, the 4 cute ladies who had done the chorus and finally SS Music for having agreed to record the show for furutre telecast.

He was also of the opinion that the show should be of normal duration so that there would always be a want among the audience to yearn for more and come back again for another concert. He also expressed his thanks to the gathering for having stayed back till the end of the show.

With that, the great show came to an end at 09.50pm and Shruthilaya signed off with a high tempo instrumental of Sangeetha megam then sindhum neram……..

Some of us stayed back for a while to catch glimpses of the LEGEND at close quarter back stage and we also took some snaps on our mobile. Finally HE bid us farewll saying "LET US MEET AT COIMBATORE"
