"Nilavum-Malarum" - A Musical Concert by SPB & S.Janaki

“NILAVUM MALARUM”
A Musical Concert by the Legends of Playback Singing “S.Janaki” and “SPB”

Venue : Nehru Indoor Stadium (Near Chennai Central Station)
Date : 29/07/2007
Time : 6:05pm
Organised by : T.V.K.Cultural Academy
Music by M.K.T. Raja’s “Theem Thiranaa” Orchestra

Dear SPB Fans,

Finally the much awaited day confronted us on 29/07/2007 and an excited team of SPB Fans found itself among the 10,000+ audience which had turned up to experience the memorable moments in store from the Gigantic Legends of Play-Back Singing “Paadum Nila” Balu and “Pani Malar”/”Paadum KuyilS.Janaki. In fact, during the program, our SPB gestured at Janakiamma when he sang the song “koo koo enru kuyil koovaadhO…” and she in turn when she sang the phrase “indha kuyil endha oor kuyil…” IT WAS A PLEASANT EXCHANGE.

The excitement started when I entered the parking area. I found it difficult to find space to park my vehicle. The space seemed to represent an ocean of cars and two wheelers. And many more vehicles were streaming in and struggling to find parking space. This was a clear indication that the auditorium would be filled up to its capacity.

The show was scheduled to start at 6:05pm as printed on the tickets. But as usual it started late at around 6:30pm. Having accommodated ourselves with an half-hour delay which is nothing as compared to the treat we were due for, our expectations was that the program would start with an introduction song by the Orchestra and then lend itself fully into the hands of the two Legends. Alas! it was not destined to be so. The Orchestra singers had the luxury of rendering four consecutive numbers ending up making the clock show 6:50pm. This literally meant a probable loss of a few songs from the Legends from their planned list.

Finally, nearing 7:00pm, the two Legends were welcomed to the stage amidst roaring applause. Our SPB greeted the crowd in his typical style of bowing and clasping his hands together and he also took the blessings of Janakiamma by touching upon her feet. He was dressed up in a dark brown coloured pant and a light coffee coloured full sleeved shirt. Janakiamma on her part was in her usual attire of white saree with small flowers printed all over it.

Song by song discussion would have no meaning here as there was not much of narration by our SPB in this show. Normally he conveys lot of information about a song during a program. Maybe since Janakiamma was also there with him and in order to fit in more number of songs with her, he might have restricted his otherwise enjoyable narrations. Also, he did not seem his normal effervescent self for most part of the program. He seemed to be tensed up at times, maybe, due to some technical problems in tuning of instruments by the orchestra especially the Tabla & the Sound System as well and later with the organisors & sponsors for not giving due recognition to Janakiamma during the presentation ceremony which took place in the second half of the program.

They started off with a duet “Paruvame Pudhiya Paadal Paadu…”. SPB did a mimicry of sorts (not able to figure why? Was it a prelude to the song in the film? May be someone can throw light on this) before launching himself into the song. He also improvised the song by first asking Janakiamma “How are you” and she replying “I am fine” and then both of them immersed themselves in the song. Thereafter it was a continuous belting of one song after another with a mixture of solos and duets and when the program did come to an end they had sung 28 songs between them.

SPB mentioned that “nilave mugam kaattu..” was their special choice for the program.

Before the song “vetri meedhu vetri vandhu…” he paid due tributes to MGR and his Guru M.S.Viswanathan for having brought him recognition in the Tamil Film Industry. This song was rendered with great energy by the Legend. He said that eventhough “Iyarkai Enum ..” was his first one, it was the MGR song which brought instant fame and recognition.

perai sollavaa…” had both of them coming into their groove with a very romantic rendition. The orchestra was also good in this number.

The Greats seemed to enjoy each other’s company once again after a long gap. SPB was always there to help Janakiamma out with respect to timing during the song & also readjusting the orchestra to suit her and she had frequent, cute & affectionate smiles for him throughout. SPB mentioned that she must have sung nearly 1000 songs for ILayaRaja alone

Before he sang “kannaal pesum penne”, he had a few words of praise for Music Director Vidyasagar for churning out meaningful and melodious numbers. Our SPB missed out on continuity during the second charanam but made it up with a jugglery of words to bring it in line and appropriately completed it with “I am sorry, I am sorry..” which was a part of the song itself. I am not sure whether this was an improvisation done by him in order to add more meaning to the “sorry” phrase. His rendition was very energetic and it belied his age totally.

nethu raathiri yemma..” had the experienced duo turn youthful belting it out energetically and making the audience dance to it. What great effect when two gigantic singing energies combine.

He was all praise for Janakiamma’s versatility for singing different types of songs in her career be it “singara vElanE….” in the classical mould or a romantic number or different voices to suit certain characters. He said that it was a boon for the Music Industry to have such a versatile singer in its midst.

In spite of her age, she did manage to present the songs in her characteristic style and voice even though at times the lower octaves did not come out clearly due to problems with the sound system. Same was the case for our SPB too.

The selection of songs needs to be lauded. Instead of sticking to the normally repetitive numbers, they had brought in great melodies which are not so frequently rendered. It was also spread to include a wide repertoire ranging from melody to fast paced numbers therefore catering to all sections of the crowd. The focus was mainly on the songs recorded during 1975 to 1990 with only a few songs on either side.

SPB said that the song “nanda nee en nila…” was his own selection for the day and he hoped everyone would enjoy it. This might not be a very familiar song for many who had tuned into listening to his songs after the early 80s but it was one of the best songs of SPB from the 1970s with a classical base, a beautiful composition by Music Director V.Dakshinamurthy and rendered exquisitely by our SPB.

During the program, our SPB expressed his thanks to Janakiamma for being one of the first few persons who had encouraged him into film singing. He told that she was around 10 years elder to him and she was still singing having completed 50 years in the Industry. Janakiamma pointed out that it was only “8 years” with child-like enthusiasm and in a sweet voice.

His mention about ILayaRaja had to do with the “then sindhudhE vaanam…” song during the recording of which, ILayaRaja was a part of Music Director G.K.Venkatesh’s Team. This evergreen number was soulfully rendered by the Greats.

His rendition of “koottaththilE koyil puraa…” received the best round of applause as it had lot of sangadhis and swaras towards the end.

Janakiamma’s rendition of “pon mEni urugudhe..” defied all logic. At the age of 69 she was able to still sing it with same emotion and deft silky touches as the original of 25 years ago.

There were a few irritants in the form of projected advertisements on the two big screens on either side of the stage between the songs. This seemed to upset the Legends and the audience too initially but finally logic prevailed as sponsors form a major part of a mega event in terms of resources and advertising during such an event would serve their cause too. This also could have been one of the reasons which would have prevented our SPB from passing on the tidbits about a song.

The presentation ceremony honouring the various sponsors and organisors as also the Legends was in the second half of the Show and it consumed 15 minutes. During this period, our SPB seemed to be perturbed with the treatment meted out to Janakiamma as it seemed she was not being duly recognized during the ceremony. He went all out to ensure that she was given due importance.

I was there till 9:30pm, up to the completion of the song “thedum kanpaarvai thavikka..” and after that I had to leave. I understood that the program came to an end at around 10.15pm. So, I happened to miss out on 6 songs.

Also, I understood later that towards the fag end of the Show, some of the SPB Fans namely Ashok, Covai Ravee, Seshadri & Priya had the honour of presenting silk shawls to SPB & Janakiamma on the stage and also that our SPB did take some time to brief to the gathering about our E-Fan Group and its charitable activities. I regret very much for having missed out on this opportunity to share the stage with the Legends due to my early exit from the Show.

Well, it was a great day for many of us listening to our Jumbo and Janakiamma. Hope you all enjoyed the narration of the event. I am looking forward to share many more such moments in the future too. Please check out for the telecast of this program on Vijay TV.

MunPaniya : A soulful rendition by the Legend

Dear SPB Fans,

Today’s discussion is about one of my favourite SPB songs. This song gives me immense pleasure whenever I savour it. It is a unique rendition by the LEGEND quite different from his other numbers.

Song : mun paniya mudhal mazhaiyaa …….
Film : Nandha (2001)
Director : Bala
Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja
Singers : SPB, Malgudi Sudha
Lyrics : Arivumathi
Actors : Surya, Laila, Rajkiran

Fans who regularly watch the “Ennodu Paattu Paadungal” program of our Legend on Jaya TV will know very well that he advocates a lot against singing in false voice and has even expressed worry & anxiety at the current trend of singing in false voice and the negative effect it could have on the vocal chords of a singer. However, in one of the recent episodes of the program when he was commenting on one of Janakiamma’s song “senthoora poove” wherein she had used false voice to good effect, he had mentioned that false voice could be used at places to enhance the beauty of rendition. This means that he is not totally against false voice, only that, it has to be judiciously employed depending on the nature and requirements of the song to add beauty.

And for this song in discussion, our SPB has indeed used false voice a lot to lend beauty to it. He has thinned his voice to such an extent at some places that it gives a very heavenly effect. He sounds very young in this song. When listened with eyes closed it takes us to a different world altogether. What a great rendition by our Legend. He has poured the utmost emotions into this song making it a memorable and an evergreen song.

Hats off to Yuvan Shankar Raja for providing a melodious orchestration to this song and proving that he is indeed the rightful heir to the Maestro. His excellent use of the flute is commendable and instruments play delightful havoc throughout the song. Add to this, the excellent use of chorus.

The lyricist Arivumathi is new to me. I understood from an article that he is one of the rare lyricists who is quite firm in not allowing English words creeping into his lyrics. He seems to have lost some opportunities because of this principle. His lyric for this song is very good. It brings out the innermost feelings of the silent lovers into words and showcases how they feel embedded in each other without expressing to each other in words.

Laila was very cute in her expressions and so too Surya with his playful glances and smile. This is a background song and the actors do not mouth the lyrics.

Pleasant experience in Toto.

ENJOY THIS SWEET MELODY

This is a solo song sung by our great S.P.B. in 1980's. This song was picturised with the hero Kirshna and Jeyanthi for the movie Anuraaga Devatha. This is a melodious song , S.P.B's voice was perfectly suited to the actor Krishna Our gr8 S.P.B used to change his voice according to the actors. He sungs this song in highpitch with clear voice, supported by the soft music background. He sings even now in so young voice. That is the magic of our S.P.B.'s voice.

Suryude Selavni

Suddala Ashok Teja, who bagged a national award for penning a song for 'Tagore' film of Chiranjeevi, had got yet another opportunity to provide a song for 'Stalin' also. He utilized the opportunity well and gave a song that makes the people to relisten it again and again because of its high literary values. The song runs in a serious mood. Balasubrahmanyam did complete justice to the song, while the drumbeat in the background score provided a right tempo to choreograph the song. Especially use of apt words in the lyric enhanced the value of the hero. The 'Mrityunjaya Mantram' elevates the mood while listening to the song.

This song is one of the oldies of 1970's, hit song, sung by iur gr8 S.P.B. This is a duet song in the movie Chalam and Vijaya Nirmala acted in this song. This was picturised in rain. A love and duet song by our guriji. His voice is so young and melodious in this song. The background music is so mild that we can hear every word clearly without the domination of music. By hearing this song, if we close our eyes and hear it, we feel like surrounded by the cool breeze of the mild rain. That is our S.P.B.'s voice magic. Felicitation to our SPB : Vajrostavam Day 2

Dear SPB Fans,

I came across this video clipping on YOUTUBE which features felicitation done to our SPB on the celebration of 75 years of Telugu Cinema. Thought you will all feel delighted to see this video clip. Please click on the PLAY button to view the clip.

Please find below an English translation of the Telugu Speeches of Shri.Dasari narayana Rao and our SPB. I have tried my best to capture the near meaning of their Speech. Hope it has come out well. Please pardon for mistakes if any.

DASARI NARAYANA RAO speech ::
Not only our Telugu Film World, the entire Nation should feel proud to have graced the Era of Shri Ghantasala. To fill the void left by him, the Goddess of Arts had given us a boon in the form of SP.Balasubramaniam. (claps). Both of us entered Fildom at the same time. Both of us looked alike – we were so lean (SPB face lightens up with a beautiful smile). Even now we are alike – I need not tell you in what way. Many singers sing a song as a song, but when two actors act their body language and their style of presenting a song differs. For the same singer to sing for 10 different heroes is an impossibility. Just by closing one’s eyes, one could tell for whom he has sung and that is possible only by HIM.(claps). He is not a SINGER, HE is a “ACTING SINGER”. That is why, even in spite of many State Awards & National Awards, HE got further national recognition through the Padma Shree Award. It did not stop here. Tamil, Kannada and in other national languages he has sung and through “Ek Duje Ke Liya” a new voice boomed in Uttara Bharatham and the entire world and it belonged to our SP.Balu and it captivated the Bombay Film World – the SP.Balu voice. A Telugu Voice making it heard across the entire nation and not only to the Telugu World and the Nation but also to the entire world presenting a classic Telugu voice is SP.Balu whom we are fecilitating today. (claps).

Balu will address you ALL. Whether singing is better or talking is better, i leave it to you ALL.

SPB speech:
On this occasion I touch upon the feet of Sripathi Panditaradhyula Sambamurthyand my mother Shakunthalamma who had given birth to me, my GodFather Kothandapani Garu who had given life to me as a singer and Padmanabham Garu who gave me the opportunity to sing my first song in his film. I express my thanks to them. I am also thankful to the entire nation especially to the Telugu people and the telugu film industry for having listened and nourished me all these 40 years and also to all music directors, technicians, my family and those who had presented my songs on the screen. If I had missed out mentioning someone please forgive me.

With that, he ended his speech by singing a few lines of “Endaro Mahanu Bhavulu…”

Nannu Brovamani > Raagam: Kalyani Singers: S.P. Balu, Sunitha

This is a very well known Ramadau keertana and SPB captures the emotion (of Ramadasu pleading Seetha devi to tell Lord Rama to bless him) and depth of the lyrics in his rendition amazingly well and you will be almost on the verge of tears listening to this. Keeravani uses the right instruments (Violin) and simple percussion to enhance the mood.

Antha Rama Mayam >> Singers: SPB Lyrics: Ramadasu, Pothana Raagam: Varali

This song starts off with Ramadasu keertana 'Anta Raama mayam' and in the end has a Bhagavata slokam 'SirikinJeppadu..' from 'Gajendra Moksham' written by Sri Bammera Pothana. Balu excels again in singing the slokam and the song and the chorus singing 'Ram Ram' is also excellent.

Parents dreaming about their child

Dear SPB Fans,

Today's song is a wonderful & soulful presentation by the "White Nightingale" Susheelamma and "Singing Moon" Baluji under the baton of the "Maestro" IlayaRaja.

Recently this song was enthusiastically discussed by our members Vijayakrishnan & Madhumita during our visit to RASA on "777" day (07/07/07) and I happened to overhear their discussion. I immediately registered it in my memory for posting and that is how it has entered this blog today.

Song : thaalaattu piLLai undu ......
Film : achchaani (1978)
Music : ILayaRaja
Singers : SPB, PS
Lyrics : Vaali
Actors : Muthuraman, Lakshmi

I understand that this song is featured on Muthuraman & Lakshmi. Beautiful lyrics by Kavignar Vaali depicting the birth of a child to the couple and the dreams that they nurture on their child's future. Our SPB & Susheelamma have provided the right emotion to the lyrics. Susheelamma's voice is sweet & crisp and her diction as usual crystal clear. Our Guruji's voice is soft and well rounded in this song. Maestro's orchestration has some improvisations. For example, the interlude before the first charanam. It starts with veena play first with guitar strings & flute following next and then a mixture of guitar and veena before the first charanam takes off. The interlude before the second charanam is very short and the Maestro compensates the loss here by bringing in a brief interlude after the two lines of that charanam which is not there in the first charanam. A super improvisation by the Maestro.

This movie was a landmark movie for Tamil Film Industry as it introduced the "Urvasi" award winner actress Shoba. Eventhough she first acted in Balachander's "Nizhal Nijamaagiradhu" and the movie was completed earlier, it was released only after "Achchaani". She acted only for a brief period of 2 to 3 years between 1978 to 1981 but she created such an impact with her natural and subtle acting that she has found a place forever in the Industry. Such a great artiste ending her life with a suicide at the young age of 20. A great loss to the Film Industry.

Now, listen to this classic melody

Dasarathi Karunapayonidhi'

"Dasarathi Karunapayonidhi' * Lyrics: Vedavyas Singers: S.P. Balu, Chitra

This song sets the stage for climax. It depicts the Ramadasu’s culmination into Lord Rama attaining Moksha/Nirvana. Ramadasu in his ''Dasarathi Satakam'' uses the punch line 'Dasarathi Karunapayonidhi'', this song starts off with that phrase and goes on like 'Neeve dikkani nammadama....seetharama swamy ne chesina neram adi emi?'. Devotion outflows from Chitra’s voice in the form of “Rama rasa ramya” resembles the river Godavari’s turbulent flow.

Ramadasu in his 'Dasarathi Satakam' uses the punch line "Dasarathi Karunapayonidhi', this song starts off with that phrase and goes on like "Neeve dikkani nammadama....seetharama swamy ne chesina neram adi emi?", so one can imagine the situation. The lyrics are exceptional and complex, so the only choice to sing such songs, SPB, has been chosen and he is superb. The chorus "Rama rasa ramya Rama..." sung by Chitra is out of the world and matches Balu's rendition to enhance the beauty of the song. One would definitely feel the pain that Ramadasu undergoes in this song. Hats off to Keeravani for such a wonderful song.

Celebration of our SPB's Birthday - 07/07/07

Dear SPB Fans,

As informed in one of the earlier postings, our SPB's Birthday this year, was celebrated with some of the Chennai based members, on behalf of the SPBFans Charitable Foundation, visiting RASA, a School for Special Children on 4th June 2007 and presenting to them a cheque for an amount of Rs.60,000 which was contributed by Fans and our SPB.

Further to the above visit, a team of Chennai Fans once again visited RASA on the "777" day (07/07/07) headed by the Webmaster. The purpose of this visit was to spend some time with the Special Children and also to handover the items bought from our donation, which could not be done during the earlier visit as the School was closed for holidays .

Members who visited this time around were
1) Webmaster - Mr.Giridhar Raja
2) Ashok (Trustee - SPBFans Charitable Foundation & Moderator too)
3) Venkat (thanks to him for arranging photographing thro' Sridhar)
4) Madhumita
5) Vijayakrishnan
6) C Balaji
7) S Balaji
8) Anand

9) Sridhar (also the photographer who captured the memorable moments)
9) Dasaradhi

We were welcomed warmly by the RASA Administrators, Staff and Children. The RASA Special children sang a few songs for us combined with some dance under the lead of Dr.Ambika, the founder of RASA. It was heart moving & soul stirring to see her & her associates treat the children as their own by exhibiting motherliness in their actions and encouraging the children to come forward to introduce themselves to us and also prompting them to perform in front of us. We were also prompted by Dr.Ambika to join in with the Children to dance for a song.

RASA had purchased some musical instruments , Wheel Chairs & Exercise Aids. These were formally handed over by our members to the RASA Administration.

On behalf of the SPBFans Charitable Foundation, we felt happy for having celebrated our SPB's Birthday by lending ourselves to a noble cause.

Uppomgele Godavari

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Wow, another top class song in the album. SPB just takes the song to a different level by his versatility and his ability to sing at a very high pitch. Words are not sufficient to describe the way SPB sings this one. This song has traits of "Yamunaa teeram.." but is even better than that. If SPB is so good in this song, then Veturi with his lyrics takes it a notch higher. One will be forced to stand and just immerse themselves (at least thrice) in the upponge aanandam while listening to this song that just flows as beautifully as the river Godavari itself. Undoubtedly this is one of the best songs heard in recent times.

Goat as a Medium for Romance

Dear SPB Fans,

Today's Posting is also a song composed by Manoj-Gyan duo.

Song : semmari aadE semmari aadE....
Film : uzhavan magan (1987)
Music : Manoj-Gyan
Singers : SPB, Vijaya
Lyrics : Aabaavaanan
Actors : Vijayakanth, Radhika, SarathKumar, RadhaRavi

This song is featured on Vijayakanth & Radhika. A goat serves as the medium for the lovers to express their feelings. A simple melody with simple use of instruments - pleasant to the ears. Our SPB brings in adequate feelings of romance, longing & cajoling in his voice at various places in the song - cute indeed. Vijaya's voice, which has traces of SP.Shailaja in it, sounds strained especially at higher pitches.

Now, listen to this simple love melody

mella mella nadandhu vandhadhu paadam ....

Dear SPB Fans,

Here is a cute melody that I am posting today

Song : mella mella nadandhu vandhadu ….
Film : urimai geetham (1988)
Director : R.V.Udayakumar
Music : Manoj-Gyan
Singers : SPB, Sangeetha
Actors : Prabhu, Ranjani, Karthik

This used to be one of my favourites during that period. The reason is the clean rendering by our SPB. The voice of Sangeetha is quite peculiar and I am not sure if she was a regular singer during that period. The orchestration by Manoj-Gyan has a good rhythmic beat as well as feel. Good one. The picturisation for this song is clean in which a saree clad Ranjani walks around in the song and proves to be a matching combination for Prabhu. I do not remember anything more than this about the movie. SO GO AHEAD & LISTEN TO THIS SONG
