Today I am posting the Hit song of SPB in Hindi "Tere Liye Jaanam" from the Movie Suhaag'(1994). Nice rendered by SPB & Chitra. Music composed by Anand Milind.

This song is very similar to 'Roja Jaaneman' from the movie 'Roja'.

Film : Suhaag
Release Year : 1994
Director : Kuku Kohli
Film Actors : Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Karishma Kapoor, Nagma
Lyrics : Sameer
Singer : S.P. Balasubrahmaniyam, Chitra
Music Director : Anand Milind

Tere Liye Jaanam Tere Liye,
Tere Liye Jaanam Tere Liye,
Yeh Meri Saansen, yeh Mera Jeevan
Bin tere Jeena Bhi Kya......

Tere Liye Jaanam Tere Liye,
Tere Liye Jaanam Tere Liye,

Hogi Koi Na Aisi Deewani..
Tujhse Joodi hai Meri Kahaani..
Teri Wafaa Ke Aage Mein haara...
Aankhon Mein tera Chehra Utaara..
Saath Jeena Hai Tere Saath Marna Hai,
Har Ghadi Sanam bas Pyar Karna Hai
Main To Deewana Hua...
Tere Liye Jaanam, Tere Liye,
Yeh Meri Saansen, yeh Mera Jeevan
Bin tere Jeena Bhi Kya..

Jhoothi nahi Thi Meri Mohabbat..
maine To Ki Thi Tujhse Shararat..
Maine Kiya Hai Tujhpe Bharosa..
Dunga Kabhi Naa Main Tujhko Dhoka..
Jo Kahaa na Tha Woh Aaj Kehna Hai..
Bin Tere Ab To Mujhko Na Rehna Hai..
Dil Mera Maange Duaa....
Tere Liye Jaanam Tere Liye,
Yeh Meri Saansen, yeh Mera Jeevan
Bin tere Jeena Bhi Kya

Jhummandi Naadam from SiriSiri Muvva

Dear SPB Fans,
Listen to this award winning song in the "SPB-PS" combo. PS won the national award for the song. This is what one of our Tamil Lyricist had to say about PS.

If you tell me that my end is nearing, and ask me my last desire, this is what I would ask: ‘Please play some song of P Suseela, and leave the room closing the door noiselessly- I wish to live once again before I die!’ .. Tamil Lyricist Vairamuthu.

Our SPB had the distinction of singing his first songs in Telugu & Tamil with PS and he would have been proud to be associated with her again in her award winning song. They made a very good combo in Telugu and had rendered several thousand songs together be it the melodious kind or pathos or galatta type.

This movie was also an hallmark movie for Jayapradha wherein she was able to present her acting credentials under the baton of K Viswanath. This was also the first movie of KV to have the carnatic flavour in it.

Jotheyali, Jothe Jotheyali - Geetha (Kannada)

Hi SPB Fans,
Today I am posting a kannada song "Jotheyali, jothe jotheyali " from the movie "Geetha"(1980) composed by Ilayaraja.
This film was released in the late 80's starring Shankar Nag and Akshata Rao. This movie was the first original story of its kind. Geetha is the name of the main lead, who happens to
fall in love with a singer (Shankar Nag). After initial hiccups the two finally look for each other
only to know that Geetha has a blood cancer. This song is the heart throbing song of young couples.

SPB and Janaki's voices also play a very good part.
SPB Has sang 2 great songs in the same movie. Kelade Nimageega (kannada version of "Devadai Ilam Devi" from "Ayiram Nilave vaa" in Tamil) & Nanna Jeeva Neenu is my alltime favourite song in Kannada.

Movie Name: Geetha
Singer: Balasubramanyam S P, Janaki S
Music Director: Ilayaraja
Lyrics: Udayashankar

Lyric for the song-
Jotheyali jothe jotheyali eruvenu heege endhu

Seethalu Singaram & Poondhenil Kalandhu

Dear SPB Fans,

Presenting to you now, bi-lingual versions of a song.

The details of the Telugu Version is as follows :

Song : Seethalu Singaram ...
Film : Seethamalakshmi (1979)
Music : K V Mahadevan
Singers : PS & SPB
Lyrics : Veturi
Director : K Viswanath
Actors : ChandraMohan & Talluri Rameswari

Both PS & SPB have rendered this song enthusiastically exchanging verses with each other. One of the good numbers in Telugu. The movie was also very good and i remember seeing it at Subham Theatre, Chennai in its year of release. The heroine Rameswari played the role beautifully with the expressive eyes conveying the emotions enchantingly.

Seethalu Singaram (Telugu)

The details of the Tamil Version is as follows :

Song : Poondhenil Kalandhu ...
Film : Eni Padigal (1979)
Music : K V Mahadevan
Singers : SPB
Lyrics : Kannadhaasan

Director : K Viswanath
Actors : Sivakumar & Shobha

Unlike the Telugu version, the Tamil film had a solo version of the song also. I have included the solo because of our SPB's beautiful improvisations in this song. This song was discussed already in the English blog by our "Prodigy Bala". He had written excellent comments for this song and i am just capturing them here in my own words. The song starts off in the "honey-filled" voice of our SPB. Just listen to the phrases "en madiyil thuLLi vizhuvaaL" & "adhil enakkum oru mayakkam". While rendering the word "thuLLI" (jumping in ecstasy) , he literally performs the word by modulating his voice to bring in a "thuLLal" effect. Likewise for the word "mayakkam" (intoxication), he renders it in an intoxicating manner lending beauty. This film had a very subtle & great performance by the award winning actress Shobha. It was indeed a great loss to the Tamil Film Industry when her life met a tragic end in the early 80s.

Aaja Shaam Hone Aayi - Maine Pyar Kiya (Hindi)

Today I am posting the Hit song of SPB in Hindi as requested by magi.
"Aaja shaam hone aayi" from the movie'Maine Pyar Kiya'(1989).

Maine Pyar Kiya is a 1989 Bollywood movie directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya and starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree. It was dubbed in to English as When Love Calls and in Spanish as Te Amo. The Hindi roughly translates into English as "I Fell In Love".
Maine Pyar Kiya was one of the most successful Bollywood movies of the 1980s and made Salman Khan a major star. The film is a departure from the gritty and violent films that were so popular in the 1970s and early 80s.and its music was responsible the films success to a large degree. A composer duo in the form of Raam - Laxman was born with this musical hit. This is one such movie which does not grow old with time.

Raam - Laxman’s Laxman's real name is Vijay Patil. He started his own orchestra named as Amar - Vijay (Amar was his son's name). The famous comedienne, Dada Kondke was impressed by him and approached him to compose the music for his Marathi comedy Pandu Hawaldar. Vijaywith his friend Raam, composed the music that went on to become a raging hit.
Shortly afterwards, Raam died tragically but Laxman retained Raam's name in both Marathi and Hindi films. Rajkumar Barjatya of Rajshri Productions offered Raam - Laxman his first Hindi film, Agent Vinod, which proved to be silver jubilee hit in 1974. Raamlaxman has since done almost 75 films in Hindi, Marathi and Bhojpuri. He created his own style well displayed by the musical hit Maine Pyar Kiya in the year 1989.

I really love the way SPB sang "To kis baat ki hai ladaai " in 1st & 2nd Stanza.

listen and enjoy !!

Movie: Maine Pyar Kiya
Cast: Salman Khan, Bhagyashree
Music: Raam Laxman
Singers: S.P.Balasubrahmaniyam & Lata Mangeshkar
Lyrics: Dev Kohli

Aaja shaam hone aayi
Mausam ne li angdaai
Aaja shaam hone aayi
Mausam ne li angdaai
To kis baat ki hai ladaai
Tu chal main aayi
Tu chal main aayi

Aaja shaam hone aayi
Mausam ne li angdaai
To kis baat ki hai ladaai
Tu chal main aayi
No no
Tu chal main aayi

Baja kya hai dekho zara tum ghadi
Guzar jaaye na prem ki ye ghadi
Baja kya hai dekho zara tum ghadi
Guzar jaaye na prem ki ye ghadi
Aati hoon thoda sa dheeraj dharo
Laga doongi main prem ki phir jhadi
Utni hi door hai tu jitni kareeb hai
Tere mere pyaar ka kissa ajeeb hai
Dhat tere ki
Ab to jaan pe ban aayi
Ye hai pyaar ki gehraai
Ab to jaan pe ban aayi
Ye hai pyaar ki gehraai
To kis baat ki hai ladaai
Tu chal main aayi
My God
Tu chal main aayi
Come soon yaar

Bahut ho chuki hai teri dillagi
Chali aao ab shaam dhalne lagi
Hey bahut ho chuki hai teri dillagi
Chali aao ab shaam dhalne lagi
Mere dil mein kitni umangein bhari
Tumhein main batati hoon aakar abhi
Haan ha mera jaadu chal gaya tera chehra khil gaya
Peechhe peechhe main chali aage aage tu chala
Dhat tere ki
To kar do sabko tum goodbye
Maine pyaar kiya main aayi
Kar do sabko tum goodbye
Maine pyaar kiya main aayi
To kis baat ki hai ladaai
Tu chal main aayi
Make it fast
Tu chal main aayi
Oh come on.

sippi irukkudu & kanne pillavani

Hi SPB Fans,

Now Posting a very beautiful song "sippi irukkudu muttam irukkudu..." from "Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu"(1980) & Its Telugu version "kannE pillavani kanullunnavani yEnnEnni" from "Aakali Rajyam" (1980). I liked Tamil version more than the telugu version.

I found this article on net-
Like SPB said before the song and continued the same way all through, the performance was like the original challenege between Kamal Hasan and Sridevi on the screen - one could see that in Balu's dialogues and expressions, some of which he improvised right then! The spontaneity with which they conversed in Tamil was impressive. When Gopika Purnima said "Sabhaash!" to SPB as a part of the song, the audience obviously burst into a cheerful applause!

SPByin Tamizh "MOZHI" Paattu

Dear SPB Fans,

I would like to present to you all my recent experience with the Tamil movie "Mozhi". I was told it is a very good movie and there I was at the theatre along with my family last Sunday (25.03.07).

Well, the beginning gave a clear hint that it was to be a great movie. Then the first few songs appeared on the screen. The songs were melodious but i could identify none of the singers from their voices. And out of the blue like a whiff of fresh air, floats our SPB's voice filling up the theatre, as he starts the song "Kannaal Pesum Penne". I had no idea that our SPB had sung a song for this film. I was least expecting it and it was a pleasant surprise for me getting treated to his voice. And WOW, how young his voice sounded. He was singing for the young hero PrithviRaj and how well it matched him. Our SPB still singing for a "24 year old" hero. Evergreen indeed. A very soft and melodious rendering with lot of voice modulations and improvisations. The way he says "i am sorry" in the song is really cute. I thought I should present to you all, this song. A lively composition by Vidyasaagar with a good rhythmic beat. From the websites, i understood that this tune was originally created by Vidyasaagar for a song in the Malayalam film "Sathyam Sivam Sundaram" which was rendered by Hariharan. I also listened to the Malayalam version. It is good in the Pallavi but is not captivating in the charanams whereas the SPB version is great throughout.

Vairamuthu is the lyricist for all the songs in this movie and it has received raving reviews from all quarters. In an interview he has said that 99% of his songs being written for tunes, in Mozhi it was tune for his lyrics which has given him more freedom.

Coming to the movie, it is a tender one with fine performances by all - PrithviRaj (a malayalam actor), PrakashRaj, Jothika, Swarnamaalya, Brahmaanandham (telugu comedian) and a few others too with Jyothika coming out with top honours in a deaf & dumb role. It is a must to see. Do not miss it. See it in the ambience of a theatre. It would be great. PrakashRaj, as the producer, has given a great offering to the masses. Not even a hint of obscenity. A good one, for the entire family. You will be in tears throughout the movie for either of the two diversified reasons - "touching scenes" & "riotous comedy woven into the storyline".

Below are some reviews i came across in some of the websites which speaks about our SPB & this song

IndiaGlitz

Can an album that is rich in resonance and rhyme miss out on the brilliance of SPB? The master packs a punch as only he can. Again it is a celebration of silence in the richest possible way. The music is full of endearing life. The jazzy feel is almost priceless as the trumpet pieces almost transport you to the streets of New Orleans. Again, the words and music both score. The life in the number is infectious and wakes up the child in you.

A blogger

Everytime I think there are so many new voice that can potentially replace SPB, he makes me fall in love with his voice all over again. Kannal Pesum Penne is easily one of his best songs in the recent times. When most people sing by the melody, melody seems to be flowing according to his singing. The expression and emotion in this voice is so rich that I can't think of anyone else who would done justice to this song. Long live the voice of this legend!

Nilacharal.com

By director's request or his own decision, Vidyasagar has re-used his Malayalam super hit tune here. Listening to S.P. Balasubramiam's voice after a long time gives the feeling of meeting an old friend after a long gap. S.P.B's voice is still in form and has refused to age along with him. The song is backed by toe-tapping rhythm and beautiful orchestration. Vairamuthu's pen has danced all over leaving his stamp all over.

Rediff News

Following this is S P Balasubramaniam's Kannaal pesum penne which is a happy blend of Indian and western tunes. The lover rues his mistake and pleads for forgiveness in a mixture of serious and playful manner. The ascent and descent of beats, rhythmic changes, impressive instrumentation and SPB's expertise in voice modulation makes this a captivating piece.

Sangeetha jathi mullai - Kadhal Oviyam

Hi SPB Fans,

Today posting "Sangeetha jathi mullai" from Kadhal Oviyam. It is also a pure classical song. The singing swaras at theend are best of the best, one of the most difficult song by our guruji.

For the movie Kathal Oviyam, IR had requested SPB to come and sing the song "Sangeetha Jaathi Mullai". SPB first refused saying he was very busy that day and had other stuff to do, and finally agreed on the condition that it will be done by 10AM. The recording finally was over at 3pm the same day. The phrase which caused the delay was "Kuyile Kuyile Untha Ragam Nenjil Indru Aadum." If you remember the song - at "Aadum" the tune reaches a crescendo (ri Ri) and then descends (to sa). Originally the descending portion was to be sung as sndpmgrs (avarohanam), but apparently SPB couldn't sing it. IR remaked "Ennapa SNDPMGRS paada mudiyaliyaa." IR had to simplified the tune twice before SPB was able to sing it correctly and the third version is what we hear today.

the above image source is from ravee annas SPB photo album. i have tried to colour this image. For more videos of SPB (more than 60 videos) visit my webpage www.zakaas4u.multiply.com

The message it conveyed was "eat only as much as you should, else it would lead to all health problems. Never overeat. Only then, one will have something to give to other needy people". he said. He found a good doctor in Valluvar who had prescribed controlled eating in his Kural. Our SPB immediately followed this up by saying "you will be wondering how come the fat SPB is saying this to you all. My being fat is due to other reasons and not due to food"

Introduction of the Chief Guest / Judge :
Our SPB introduced Mr. V.Raju (84 olds old) who had performed for 65 years in the Tamil Music Industry. His repertoire included playing instruments/arts like konnakoal (jadhi), veenai, mandolin, sitar and also santhoor which was first introduced by him in South Indian Film Industry. He was the one who performed the jadhis for M.R.Radha in the film "Balae Paandiya" for the song "Neeye Enakku Endrum Nigaraanavan...". He has performed whistling in many Susheela songs like "Nenjathile Nee Netru vandhaaiy......", "neeroadum vaigaiyile... (our SPB whistled for this quite beautifully in the program). He wondered how Mr.Raju could do it so well when only manual recording was possible in those days. He also used to teach veenai & mandalin. He is senior to MSV and has been part of MSV troupe. He has two sons Logu & Seenu who are also musicians performing in ILayaRaja 's troup. He has performed for all MDs in the South and also for some North MDs.

First Round of the Contest :
The list of songs of this contest were,
1) Sonnadhu nee dhaanaa sol sol...... from Nenjil Oar Aaalayam (Susheela)
The contestant was Ms.Asha from New Delhi. She introduced herself and one understood that she did not know Tamil and that her mother tongue is konkani. She had written the lyrics in English and had practised the song by listening to the audio several times. Our SPB asked her how come she happened to participate in this program. She said that at first she had no interest but due to her mother's persuasion she had sent her recorded song to Jaya TV and got selected and she expressed her thanks for that now. Our SPB thanked her mother for instigating Asha. She started off and did quite well reproducing the right emotions and sangadhis of the Susheela number. Our SPB had immediate appreciation for her Tamil pronounciation and applauded her well for her rendition too. However, he pointed certain small mistakes in landing notes at higher pitch. ManoBala the permanent judge cum scorer, on his part, briefed about the picturisation of the song highlighting that with limited facilities those days, the cameraman Vincent had done a wonderful job by good improvisation of camera movements and it was a good learning for upcoming directors like him in those days. Our SPB mentioned that sitar exponent Ahmed Hussain from North played sitar for this song who later settled in chennai and taught many children. He once again thanked Asha for her Tamil.

2) Kangal enga nenjammum ange .... from Karnan (Susheela)
Gayatri rendered this song well. Our SPB mentioned that all parameters were good but called for little more involvement while singing. He also provided information that all songs for the film were completed in 3 days flat (actually planned 10 days) at Bangalore. It happened that Kavignar Kannadaasan started writing and lyrics flowed just like that . Dhilruba (by exponent Raam Naik from North) & saarangi were extensively used for this film. Santhoor by Raju. Our SPB had gathered all these info from MSV.

3) Poongaatrile ...... from Uyire (UnniMenon)
Bharath rendered this song. Our Great's comments were "well tried". He talked of better control of sruthi at higher notes, Expression, dynamics & volume control and asked him to improve in next round.

4) Ilamai Enum Poongaatru .... from Pagalil Oar Iravu (SPB)
Sathish rendered this. Our SPB's comments was only on diction with care on pronouncing "Naa" in words like Gavanam & Payanam. (small & big naa). He said that as the saying goes "Big people think alike", similar tune had earlier been used by O.P.Nayyar for an Hindi song 'Jaaye Aapka' (he also sang a bit of that song). IR never copied this, it is just that great musicians think alike. He also said that wherever IR had copied or drawn inspiration from SDB or MSV he had made it public. SPB queried Mr.Raju about his association with IR and he said that he had played the santhoor for the BalamuraliKrishna song "Chinna Kannan Azhaikkiraan...". It seems IR always mentions this song to Mr.Raju appreciating the instrument play and wondered why he doesn't play for IR. However our SPB mentioned that his two sons had become a permanent part of IR's troup. Normally IR does not compose any song without the santhoor. SPB also said that MDs like KVM, MSV & IR were so great because they gave due importance to all aspects namely the film, song situation, the lyrics & the singer and did not compose just for the sake of making music.

5) Pesulaavudhe Then Malar.... Manaalane Mangaiyin Baakkiyam (Ghantasala & PS)

Raagini sang this wonderful song well. Our SPB mentioned that this was in Hamsaanandi raagam and his first experience with the raagam which had a kalayani finish for this song. This song had lot of classical sangadhis. He mentioned that when this film was dubbed in Hindi, Rafi saab was called to render this song along with Lataaji. It seems Rafi at first refused saying that he was not capable of rendering such classical compositions and recommended singer Mannadi for the song. However, the MD wanted only Rafi voice and it consumed lot of takes before taking shape. This was narrated by Lataaji, he told. He also said that in many competitions, contestants render this song and usually ended up bagging the honours. He wondered regarding the fate in this contest. He just pointed a small mistake in one of the sangadhis and advised the singer not to move away from the mic even if one knows that there is a mistake in rendition. Other than this, he said that it was a difficult song well rendered.

6) Munbe Vaa........ from Jillendru Oru Kaadhal (Shreya Ghoshal)
Malathi sang this song. Before that, our SPB was happy to note that all the contestants were either engineers or doctors and said at a later date he would find pride in saying that this great engineer/doctor sang before him in a competition (so nice of him). He asked the contestant why she had selected such a difficult song. However he praised her for her good rendition. At this instance, he said it would not be right on his part if he did not speak about Shreya Ghoshal. It seems she is a Bengali girl who had won a singing contest at a young age of 19 and had gained entry to film singing. He appreciated her (shreya) for her good singing and Tamil diction which was the best among the present crop of bollywood singers crooning in Tamil. He then mentioned that it was always difficult how ARR defines his composition. One never knows where a Pallavi & Charanam will start and end but somehow he had a knack of introducing great sounds at places to make the composition beautiful. He said that ARR was able to strive after MSV & IR because of the change and individuality he had brought into his compositions. This is what brings fame, he said. Musicians nowadays are just trying to unearth how he had composed. Similar was the case during IR's reign, he said. He also lauded ARR for his simplicity for he never spoke ill of anyone. He was one who inspite of international acclamation never sought publicity and concentrated on work, his other attributes being hard work, god fearing, respect to seniors....

Message from our SPB :
The message for this episode was "never get hasty to cross railway tracks. Many people squeeze below the gates or on the sides and try to hurry through before the train passes. There is no need for that thereby endangering our lives. A few minutes wait is not going to make a big difference when compared to the value of our life. At unmanned crossings, vehicles tend to ignore signals and there is always a chance of breakdown on the tracks and one cannot file a case against the Railways as it is their prescribed path and it is only we the public who should take care to protect our lives. One should never be in a hurry to go "up" because life is precious and there are many dependents. Same is the case when moving between platforms. Many take the easier route of jumping & running across the tracks while overweight people take to overbridges. He also humourously proclaimed "do not think i cannot jump and move over tracks, it is just that i don't do it" . He requested one and all to show restraint and follow rules.

SPB song :
He closed off the episode with the song "Nilavu Thoongum Neram"

Thalukki Thalukki .... A great galatta song by our SPB

Dear SPB Fans,

Listen to this super galatta song by our SPB. This song features Karthik and Kushboo with the former ragging the latter in the song. Our SPB has literally "kalakkufied" (freaked out) very much in this song. His rendering clearly reflects the playfulness and the pranks in the picturisation. I have nothing more to talk about. Simply a super kalakkal (freaking). Maestro ILayaraja has also freaked out with a pumping orchestration. I like the use of a peculiar background sound which comes throughout in all the Pallavis. The interludes are also good with lot of variations. I just love this song for our SPB's way of singing. ENJOY

Unsung_SPB - Kanne Kalaimane - Moondram Pirai

Hi SpB Fans,

From Now I will be posting Unsung_SPB Album SOngs. These songs were posted earlier on this blog by Sundar, I am posting them again for Ravee anna, who approached me for this.

I was seaching for SPB hindi songs in "Planet M" in June 2005, suddenly my friend showed me SPB Unsung CD. I Checked all songs, but only Hamma Hamma song was known to me. I bought that CD & Really loved all the 14 classics by our SPB. Later I Collected the Original Soundtracks also for the Unsung SOngs. SPB has sung all songs in his own style.

I sent a mail to our Guruji & asked him to release a Hindi Album same like Unsung. Guruji replied,

"Dear Vikas,

Regarding the tamil songs to be made in Hindi, there are lots of
hurdles. We need the permission of the original producers and music
directors. Most of them ask for royalty. These are headaches.
I am very grateful for your love.
God bless you.
SPB.

Ennodu Paattu Paadungal - Episode dated 17.03.2007

Dear SPB Fans,

Here are the audio clips of EPP-17.03.07 (courtesy : Covai Ravee) along with a write-up. This episode is a continuation of the previous episode with the same set of contestants (5 female & 1 male) of whom one was selected at the end of this episode to proceed to the next stage.

By now, many of you must be familiar with the format of the contest. Anyway, for those who are not familiar, i will detail it now.

The contest starts off with 6 contestants and is covered in two episodes on two different dates (Saturdays evening 8-9pm on Jaya TV).

In the first episode, our SPB comes to the dias & introduces the chief guest/judge for the contest (two episodes) with a brief biography followed by the rendition of a "Kural" and then the message it conveys. Then, our SPB, the chief judge & the regular judge cum scorer-Mano Bala are seated and our SPB invites the contestant on to the stage for the first round. The first round involves the rendition of melody numbers. The contestant introduces with name, place, occupation, parents' names & music teacher's name. Next, our SPB reads out the details of the song chosen by the contestant namely song starting words and names of the singer(s), movie, music director & lyricist. The contestant then renders the song which receives feedback/comments primarily from our SPB with occasional comments by the Chief Judge / regular judge cum scorer(Mano Bala). All the 6 contestants complete this cycle. Then the episode ends with a closing social message and a song by our SPB.

In the second episode (involving the same set of 6 contestants), our SPB comes to the dias and renders a "Kural" and then explains the message it conveys. Then with our SPB, Chief Judge & regular judge cum scorer(Mano Bala) seated, the second round of the contest begins. The second round involves rendition of fast / rhythmic numbers. Our SPB invites the contestant on to the stage. Next, our SPB reads out the the details of the song chosen by the contestant namely song starting words and names of the singer(s), movie, music director & lyricist and the contestant presents the song which receives feedback/comments primarily from our SPB with occasional comments by the Chief Judge / regular judge cum scorer(Mano Bala). All the 6 contestants complete this cycle. Next, the third round follows. In this round, our SPB renders a tune or rhythm pattern of a portion of a song and taking cue from this, the contestants have to identify the song and then sing the pallavi or charanam as specified by our SPB. He selects from a list of 25 songs that each contestant had given to him during audition. This ensures that identification of the song is made a bit easier for the contestants who can prepare in advance from the list they had given. Again each contestant receives feedback.

Now with all the three rounds completed, finally all the three - SPB, Chief Judge & Mano Bala come on to the dias. Our SPB delivers a social message and then Mano Bala reads out the scores of each participant and finally the winner of the contest is declared based on the highest score. Each contestant is scored against four critirea - sruthi, thala, bhava & performance. The selected contestant is now eligible for the next round of contest.

This pattern is repeated and once in two weeks a winner emerges and all these winners will contest each other after the preliminaries are over.

Now, coming to the last week's episode, which is a continuation of the previous episode, our SPB started off with the rendition of a "Kural". The essence of the Kural is that "developing anger and displaying anger is injurious to both mind and health (high blood pressure). Anger shown on a person is progressive and contagious. Eg. anger shown towards a subordinate can get transferred to his/her spouse at home and finally to the children. So, it is better to control one's anger. Anger can be used positively depending on the circumstances. So, let us do away with it and lead a stress free life"

If you recall, the chief judge in the previous episode was T.K.Ramamurthy of the MSV-TKR duo. He was also present for this episode.

All the contestants completed the second round comprising fast/rhythmic numbers followed by the third round.

Again, as in the previous rounds, our SPB's feedback was mostly related to singing at a comfortable sruthi suiting the individual's range and eliminating the sruthibedham.

He was particularly appreciative of one contestant by name "Ravi". He lauded him for adapting only the style of the original singer and singing in his own voice without imitating the original singer's. Eventually, this contestant emerged as the winner of this round of contest. I think this same Ravi is also the winner of the music contest "Reliance Mobile Launch Pad" organised by "SS Music" which had its finals on 19th March '07 (our group member also contested in this program - Balaji). I happened to see a photograph of the three toppers of the SS program in today's HINDU supplement and from the photograph, i identified him (Ravi). His name was mentioned against the winner in the article. Now, he has also caught the attention of our SPB in this EPP contest.

The contest finally came to a close with all the three celebrities taking the stage. Our SPB delivered his social message related to the influences of Road Roko by lawyers, students, politicians etc. on the public. He mentioned that it caused so much hardship to office goers, candidates attending interviews and people in need of medicare. Rokos also affected travellers with public transportation getting stranded at places and the passengers put to difficulty for want of proper food & water. He was worried that even educated people seemed not to realise this. He recommended that this protest could be done near the concerned agency without obstructing public life.

The chief judge T.K.Ramamurthy mentioned that it was indeed hard to select a single winner from the contestants who all had performed well. But given the circumstances of the contest there was no other choice, he said. He wished that the female contestants should become like MS, PS & SJ and the male contestant better than SPB. Our SPB welcomed this comment and said this was the blessing that all the contestants needed from him (TKR).

Then Mano Bala read out the scores. Ravi topped with 220 points to his credit. Apt to the title of the program, he then joined our SPB to sing the song "Pottuvaitha Mugamo..." from the film "Sumathi En Sundari" bringing out the essence of the program "Ennodu Paattu Paadungal". He is fortunate indeed to sing with the Great SPB. After the song, our SPB mentioned that he was happy to sing with him and wished him well for the future. He said may be one day he may sing along with him for a movie or sing for his (Ravi) composition. Most encouraging words from our Guruji.

Manadhil Enna Ninaivugalo

Dear SPB Fans,

This song "Manadhil Enna Ninaivugalo....." from the Tamil Film "Poonthalir" (1979) is one of our SPB's mellifluous songs composed by Maestro ILayaRaja. The film featured Sivakumar & Sujatha. I happened to see the climax part of this movie a few weeks back on TV and this song appears at the end and in fact is one such song which is tied to the story and not a standalone as is the case with the songs of the present. I had heard this song a few times during that period and i felt it would be a good one to present to you all.

The composition for this song is quite unique in the sense that it captures both the setting for the song and also the feeling that the lyrics are meant to generate.

The song is picturised in a discotheque with a couple dancing and singing the song. The song is aimed at clearing the confusion in the mind of the lady (i think it is the second heroine) who had come to the place for solace.

To reflect the scene, IR starts off with a rhythmic orchestration capturing the setting of the discotheque and then later when the lyrics start flowing, he has set the tune & orchestration to bring out the feeling of the words.

Our SPB has rendered this song with adequate emotion in his voice, a bit subdued as required. SP Shailaja starts off the song with a humming and our SPB joins in and takes the song through with his soulful rendering finally culminating in his beautiful humming accompanied by SPS. For the record, 1979 was the beginning of SP.Shailaja's career in Tamil Filmdom.

Lyrics for the song is by Panju Arunachalam who was instrumental in introducing ILayaraja to Tamil Film World through the movie "AnnakiLi"

Aake Teri Baahon Mein - Vansh (Hindi)

Hi SPB Fans,

I am posting the Massive Hit song of SPB in Hindi "Aake teri Baahon Mein" from the movie'Vansh'(1992).

This movie is a story of Two warring step-brothers who team up to get the villains out to kill their bigamous father. It is a remake of Mani Ratnam's Tamil movie 'Agni Nakshatram'(1988). Later dubbed in Telugu as "Gharshana".

Lyrics written by Sameer & Music composed by Anand-Milind. Anand-Milind have composed many classic songs for SPB after Raam-Laxman. But Raam-laxman have given the maximum original tracks while Anand-milind have copied all ilayraja compositions in hindi.

This song is very similar to SPB's Tamil Song "Keladi Kanmani". This romantic song has been sung with a lot of genuine feeling by our SPB & Lata.

Listen & Enjoy this Romantic Song.

Movie: Vansh (1992)
Cast: Sudesh Berry, Siddharth, Anupam Kher
Music: Anand Milind
Singers: S.P.Balasubrahmaniyam & Lata Mangeshkar
Lyrics: Sameer

Lyric:-

Aake Teri Baahon Mein, Har shaam lage sindoori
Mere man ko mahakaye, tere man ki kasturi

Mehakee hawaayen udataa aanchal, lat ghoongharaale kaale baadal
prem sudhaa nainon se barase, pee lene ko jeewan tarase
baahon mein kas lene de, preet kaa chumban lene de
In adharon se chhalak naa jaaye, yauwan ras angooree
aa ke teri baahon mein, har shaam lage sindoori

sundarataa kaa bahataa saagar, tere liye hain rup ke baadal
indradhanush ke rang churaoo, teri julmee maang sajaaoo
do foolon ke khilane kaa, waqt yahee hain milane kaa
aajaa mil ke aaj mitaa de, thodee see ye dooree
aa ke teri baahon mein, har shaam lage sindoori
Mere man ko mahakaye, tere man ki kasturi
aa ke teri baahon mein, har shaam lage sindoori
