Sangeetha Sagara Ganayogi Panchakshara Gavai

Dear Friends,

Here is a National Award Song by our SPB for the above Kannada Film.

Our Covai Ravi had kindled my thoughts about other language songs of our SPB and i thought why not include this song.

Only yesterday i searched for this song and heard it the first time. I was really stunned. What is that our SPB is not capable of doing, i wondered ? Give him anything and he comes out with an "out of the world" performance.

I was mesmerised by this song even though i could not understand an iota of what the song is all about (Maybe Kannada fans can throw in light about this song).

It is an Hindustani Classical based song. I would put it as equivalent to what our SPB did earlier for Sankarabharanam.

Music is by Hamsalekha. SPB received the National Award for this song in 1995. At that time i happened to read an article and my understanding goes like this.
It seems Hamsalekha had approached our SPB for this song. After knowing that, it was an Hindustani based song, our SPB was reluctant and said that, it would take a long time for him to record the song. Hamsalekha was prepared to wait, and wait he did, for "6 to 8 months" just for SPB to sing the song. WHAT GREAT TRIBUTE CAN ONE GIVE THIS LEGENDARY SINGER. SING HE DID, TO MAKE IT A NATIONAL AWARD WINNING SONG.

Like the normal Hindustani numbers it starts off in a lazy fashion and slowly picks up tempo and ends in a high paced climax.

Just listen to the rich tone that our SPB has given for this song and the voice modulation that he has done to bring-in that Hindustani touch. This clearly brings out, how much home work and dedication he has put in, to learn the nuances of the art and then perform rather than a hotch-potch rendering which would have also gone well with the music director.

I am not aware of the song situation or the actors involved. So, i request our Kannada fans or any other fan who is knowledgeable on this song to add more information.

This song transcends all barriers. All should listen and enjoy this song.

PLEASE HAVE YOUR EYES CLOSED, WHEN LISTENING, TO DRINK-IN THE FULL BEAUTY OF THIS GREAT SONG.

Am one of those c"crazy" SPB fans --- have stumbled on this much later I guess (am not so regular in the egroup/blog).

This song is a great rendition which ofcourse fetched him a national award. No 'arugadhai' to talk about such a great rendition- so I will not.

This movie is based on the life of a hindustani music great called SANGEETHA SAGARA GANAYOGI PANCHAKSHARA GAWAI. He was blind but was apparently a genius. He hailed from North Karnataka, a region which has a rich history of churning out great hindustani musiscians like Bhimasen joshi (Gadag), Gangubhai hangal (Hubli), Mallikarjun Mansur (Dharwad).
